Founded in 1976, the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CJLACS) publishes distinguished research and debates on Latin America and the Caribbean. The CJLACS makes an important contribution to furthering knowledge about these regions in Canada and around the world. It offers scholars, graduate students, and independent researchers a Canadian venue for publishing their work. It publishes peer-reviewed articles based on original research, in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. It is indexed in: America: History and Life; Ausgewahlte Neuere Literatur; Dokamentationsdient Lateinamerika; Geographical Abstracts; The Handbook of Latin American Studies; The Hispanic American Periodicals Index; Historical Abstracts; International Bibliography of the Social Sciences; PAIS Bulletin; Sociological Abstracts; Worldwide Political Science Abstracts . The CJLACS is published twice yearly by the University of Calgary Press. Each issue of the Journal contains several articles as well as reviews of recent publications about Latin America and the Caribbean. Its publication is normally made possible in part by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Interested persons are invited to submit articles, reviews, or books for review.

Caribbean Studies is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journal published since 1961 by the Institute of Caribbean Studies, College of Social Sciences, University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. The journal publishes twice a year original works on the Social Sciences and the Humanities in English, Spanish and French languages. It is written and edited by and for Caribbeanists and other persons keenly interested in keeping up with the ongoing research and writing in the field of Caribbean Studies. The journal is divided in four parts: articles, research notes, book reviews, and news and events. Also, sometimes the journal includes photographic essays and obituaries of important scholars working on the Caribbean.

Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean is no longer perpetrated primarily by states against their citizens, but by a variety of state and non-state actors struggling to control resources, territories, and populations. This book examines violence at the subnational level to illuminate how practices of violence are embedded within subnational configurations of space and clientelistic networks. In societies shaped by centuries of violence and exclusion, inequality and marginalization prevail at the same time that democratization and neoliberalism have decentralized power to regional and local levels, where democratic and authoritarian practices coexist. Within subnational arenas, unique configurations - of historical legacies, economic structures, identities, institutions, actors, and clientelistic networks - result in particular patterns of violence and vulnerability that are often strikingly different from what is portrayed by aggregate national-level statistics. The chapters of this book examine critical cases from across the region, drawing on new primary data collected in the field to analyze how a range of political actors and institutions shape people's lives and to connect structural and physical forms of violence.
