Die Monographie des ehemaligen Bundesanwalts Walter Wagner über den nationalsozialistischen Volksgerichtshof erschien erstmals 1974. Mit ihrer klaren Analyse der Stellung des 1934 geschaffenen Gerichts für politische Strafsachen im Rechtssystem des NS-Regimes und ihrer auf einer beeindruckenden Materialbasis fußenden Darstellung seiner Urteilspraxis ist sie bis heute ein unverzichtbares Grundlagenwerk. Die Beschreibung zahlreicher Prozesse gegen Angehörige des deutschen und europäischen Widerstandes, aber auch gegen angebliche oder tatsächliche Spione sowie "Wehrkraftzersetzer" veranschaulichen den Charakter des Volksgerichtshofs als eines sich immer mehr radikalisierenden Repressionsinstruments der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur. Ein Überblick über die einschlägige Forschung der Jahre 1975 bis 2010 von Jürgen Zarusky führt das Werk an den aktuellen Stand heran.

Love between Enemies explores the forbidden relationships which formed between foreign prisoners of war and German women during the Second World War. From the desire to have fun to deep love commitments, this study examines the range of motivations which lay behind these relationships, tapping into new documents and drawing on thousands of court cases to offer a transnational analysis of personal relations between enemies. Highlighting gender roles, the contradictory reactions of the communities surrounding the couples, and the diplomatic tensions resulting from the severe punishments, this is a history of everyday life which throws light on this subversive aspect of intimacy in wartime Nazi Germany. Comparing the 'transgressing' couples to other groups persecuted for their cultural or private choices, Scheck demonstrates how the relationships were silenced or justified in the post-war memory of prisoners, while the German women, who had been publicly shamed, continued to live with the stigma, and even illegitimate children, for the years that followed.

This innovative study regards National Socialist criminal law—in accordance with the theories of continuity and radicalisation—as the racist (anti-Semitic), nationalistic (Germanic) and totalitarian updating of the authoritarian and anti-liberal tendencies found in German criminal law at the turn of the 20th century and during the Weimar Republic. The author proves this thesis through systematic analysis of the works of relevant authors, focusing primarily on the texts, which speak for themselves, rather than on morally judging the people who wrote them. In doing so, he also examines the reception of German (National Socialist) criminal law in Latin America. The aforementioned continuity did not only exist from a past perspective (post-Weimar), but also from a forward-looking perspective (‘the Bonn Republic’ 1949–1990). In short, neither did National Socialist criminal law appear from nowhere, nor did it completely disappear after 1945, which has seamlessly led to the modern-day attempt to reconstruct the identity of this Germanic myth through the so-called ‘neue Rechte’ or ‘New Right’ political movement.
