"Donald Judd writings", copublished by Judd Foundation and David Zwirner Books, is the most comprehensive collection of the artist's writings assembled to date. This timely publication includes Judd's best-known essays organized chronologically with little-known texts previously published in limited editions. This new collection also includes unpublished college essays and hundreds of never-before-seen handwritten notes, a critical but unknown part of Judd's writing practice. Judd's earliest published writing, consisting largely of reviews for hire, defined the terms of art criticism in the 1960s, but his essays as an undergraduate at Columbia, published here for the first time, contain the seeds of his later writing, and allow readers to trace the development of his critical style. The writings that followed Judd's early reviews are no less significant art-historically, but have been relegated to smaller publications and have remained largely unavailable until now. The largest addition of newly available material is Judd's unpublished notes--transcribed from his handwritten accounts of and reactions to subjects ranging from the politics of his time, to the literary texts he admired most, from complaints about pluralism in art to his admiration for Giambattista Vico, and through him, Lucretius. In these intimate reflections we see Judd's thinking at its least mediated--a mind continuing to grapple with questions of its moment, demonstrating the intensity of thought that continues to make Judd such a formidable presence in contemporary art.

"Published to accompany the first US retrospective exhibition of Donald Judd's sculpture in more than 30 years, Judd explores the work of a landmark artist who, over the course of his career, developed a material and formal vocabulary that transformed the field of modern sculpture. Donald Judd was among a generation of artists in the 1960s who sought to entirely do away with illusion, narrative and metaphorical content. He turned to three dimensions as well as industrial working methods and materials in order to investigate 'real space,' by his definition. Judd surveys the evolution of the artist's work, beginning with his paintings, reliefs and handmade objects from the early 1960s; through the years in which he built an iconic vocabulary of works in three dimensions, including hollow boxes, stacks and progressions made with metals and plastics by commercial fabricators and continuing through his extensive engagement with color during the last decade of his life. This richly illustrated catalog takes a close look at Judd's achievements, and, using newly available archival materials at the Judd Foundation and elsewhere, expands scholarly perspectives on his work. The essays address subjects such as his early beginnings in painting, the fabrication of his sculptures, his site-specific pieces and his work in design and architecture"--

Donald Judd (1928-1994) is one of the most influential American artists of the postwar era. Beginning in the 1960s, he developed new ideas about art–in both his works and writings–that challenged many of modernism’s core tenets by resisting the categories of painting and sculpture. Judd described this work as “specific objects.” Critics labeled it minimalism. Perhaps because Judd’s own critical writings provide a discursive framework for his work, some of the monographic essays on his work are not widely known. This volume collects critical and scholarly writings on Judd, examining his work as both artist and critic.

This newly expanded edition presents an unprecedented visual survey of Donald Judd’s living and working spaces in New York and Texas. Edited by Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd, it includes newly commissioned and archival photographs presented alongside five essays and drawings for architecture and design by the artist. From 101 Spring Street, a 19th-century cast-iron building in Manhattan, to Ayala de Chinati, an extensive ranch in the mountains of western Texas, this book details the interiors, exteriors, and land surrounding the buildings that comprise Judd’s extant living and working spaces stewarded by Judd Foundation. Each space was thoroughly considered by Judd with resolute attention to function and design. From furniture to utilitarian structures that Judd designed himself, these spaces underscore his deep interest in the preservation of buildings and his deliberate interventions within existing architecture.

One of the most important American artists of the 20th century, Donald Judd (1928-1994) pioneered the use of industrial materials and fabrication in serial forms to redefine the relationships between artist, art object, viewer, and space, and usher in the minimalist style. Focusing entirely on Judd's multicoloured works, this work features essays by leading scholars that illuminate this body of work and examine its relationship to his oeuvre as a whole.

This fully illustrated catalogue was published on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, England, in 2010 (which traveled to the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, in 2011). The exhibition features Judd’s furniture and related drawings, including chairs, beds, shelves, desks, and tables made from solid wood, metal, and ply. Amongst the works on view are a number of prototypes, including early examples the artist constructed himself, such as Bookshelves (1968) and Children’s Desk (1977), which are rarely shown outside of Judd’s adopted home of Marfa, Texas. This bilingual catalogue (English and German) also includes texts by the artist and design critic Alex Coles.
