Abstract

Abstract

In proposing that places, movements, and directions are deeply implicated in the narrative structure of Ulysses, Michael Seidel contends that Joyce recreates in Dublin the significant epic geography of the Odyssey. The author demonstrates how Joyce adjusts the spaces of Ulysses to accommodate the three theaters of Homeric action as mapped by Victor Berard's Lex Pheniciens et I'Odyssee.Originally published in 1976.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract

James Joyce has a reputation for being one of modern literature's most difficult writers. This introduction gives students the necessary tools they will need to get the most out of reading him. It provides the essential biographical information and situates his life and works in broader cultural, historical, and literary contexts. Students will also find detailed examinations of the major works including Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. In addition, Bulson lets students see how Joyce evolved as a writer. This introduction also provides a brief history of the critical reception of Joyce's life and works and explains what a variety of critical approaches can teach us. A guide to further reading has been included for those interested in consulting some of the more influential secondary works. This accessible and lively introduction gives students everything they will need to get started reading, understanding, and appreciating Joyce.

Abstract

The papers collected in this volume capture some of the excitement of the 11th International James Joyce Symposium, held in Venice and Trieste, June 1988. 'The contents of this book are by no means as restrictive as the title might suggest. The contributors explore not only Joyce's 'languages' and modes of communication and meaning, but, as well, concepts of significance and communication in broader contexts. Through Joyce, the writers explore and develop their own approaches and theories about language and languages, about semiotics and understanding. And about psychology, gender,

Abstract

Joyce was fascinated by error throughout his writing career, from the malapropisms of characters in Dubliners , through to misquotations and misappropriations in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and the errors and gaffes committed by Leopold Bloom in Ulysses . This interest culminates in the ceaseless perversions of language, perspective and fact in Finnegans Wake . Error is not, however, something that Joyce only writes about: it happens to him and his texts in the form of misprints and inadvertent factual errors, through the interventions of others and through lapses in Joyce’s own practice. Indeed, part of the richness of this topic for those who are interested in Joyce’s writing is the difficult process of disentangling deliberate features of the text from unintended slippages. Errears and Erroriboose is the first major collection of essays to address the topic of Joyce and error. It brings together eight essays in order to provide readers with an understanding of the diverse ways in which error features in Joyce’s writings. A variety of different critical perspectives and approaches to the topic can be found here and the volume is of interest to students of Joyce’s work at all levels. These include archival and genetic study of the role of error in the composition of Joyce’s works; consideration of the psychological implications of error; work on the material and historical consequences of error; and close readings of the verbal effects of errors and mistakes.

Abstract

Unlike many recent Joyce studies, De-familiarizing Readings eschews the theoretical and ideological and instead plants itself on firmer ground. Its seven outstanding Joyce scholars share a love of the “stuff” of texts, contexts, and intertexts: data and dates, food and clothing, letters and journals, literary allusions, and other quotidian desiderata. Their inductive approaches - whether to Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist, Ulysses , or Finnegans Wake - are thoroughly researched, argued with meticulous, even nit-picking, precision, and offer the pleasurable reading experience of forensic analysis. And in the end they provide the satisfaction of reaching persuasive conclusions that seem both striking and inevitable.
