Il monachesimo di Gaza ha sempre attratto e affascinato. I contributi qui contenuti fanno emergere gli accenti di un monachesimo che insiste sull'ascesa sulla croce al seguito di Gesù, e sul taglio della propria volontà come adesione, sull'esempio di Cristo al volere di Dio: questo tramite la direzione di coscienza di un "Padre". I tratti di questo monachesimo, già insinuati dai legami col monachesimo egiziano, sono qui precisati dal confronto col monachesimo palestinese contemporaneo. Esso si irradia dalla Città Santa di Gerusalemme, con i luoghi memoriali della vita di Gesù e della Chiesa primitiva, al deserto di Gaza dove fioriscono i monasteri più attivamente impegnati nella vita ecclesiale.
