La fin du Moyen Age voit apparaître et se développer un ensemble d’images tout à fait singulier, celles d’hommes et de femmes dont le corps est intégralement couvert de poils. Mais, pour autant, ce livre n’est pas une simple histoire du poil ! Dans l’art roman, le diable et les démons étaient perçus comme des êtres velus et grimaçants et un lien s’était établi entre l’excès de poils et le pêché. L’auteur montre comment ces représentations ont évolué à partir du XIVe siècle, allant jusqu’à l’humanisation de l’homme sauvage. Ce dernier est certes toujours présenté comme un personnage frustre, hirsute et violent, mais il change de signification en pénétrant dans la culture courtoise : l’homme sauvage devient un personnage soumis et domestiqué qui sert de faire-valoir au chevalier, comme pour opposer la jouissance brutale et immédiate au vrai désir amoureux. L’auteur va jusqu’à nous montrer que, par un retournement spectaculaire porté à son comble autour de 1500, pilosité et sainteté sont associées : la présence d’un pelage sur les corps des saints devient un moyen de les distinguer du commun des mortels.

This book is the first major study of providence in the thought of John Chrysostom, a popular preacher in Syrian Antioch and later archbishop of Constantinople (ca. 350 to 407 CE). While Chrysostom is often considered a moralist and exegete, this study explores how his theology of providence profoundly affected his larger ethical and exegetical thought. Robert Edwards argues that Chrysostom considers biblical narratives as vehicles of a doctrine of providence in which God is above all loving towards humankind. Narratives of God's providence thus function as sources of consolation for Chrysostom's suffering audiences, and may even lead them now, amid suffering, to the resurrection life-the life of the angels. In the course of surveying Chrysostom's theology of providence and his use of scriptural narratives for consolation, Edwards also positions Chrysostom's theology and exegesis, which often defy categorization, within the preacher's immediate Antiochene and Nicene contexts.
