Abstract

This book explains how to use intravitreal steroids optimally in the management of patients with intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and macular edema. The rationale for this treatment approach is first explained by examining the pathophysiology of these disease entities, with particular attention to the major role of inflammatory processes. Devices for the delivery of steroids to the eye are discussed, and guidance provided on the role of imaging studies before, during, and after steroid therapy. The value of different steroidal approaches is then considered in detail. Other topics addressed include the use of steroids as a surgical adjunct and within a combination strategy. Uveitis and macular edema are common sight-threatening diseases or complications of diabetes and retinal vein occlusion for which no adequate treatment was available until recently. Both trainees and practitioners will find Intravitreal Steroids to be an invaluable aid in combating these blinding diseases.

Abstract

"Neural Therapy (NT) is a treatment of dysfunction(s) within the autonomic nervous system (ANS). NT was developed in Germany in the early part of this century by two physicians, Walter and Ferdinand Huneke. Historically it involves the injection of procaine into scars, glands, trigger points, acupuncture points, vascular structures, ligaments and autonomic ganglia. This is a revised and updated 3rd edition in English. This atlas, with its outstanding color photographs and anatomical drawings, gives the physician who uses Neural Therapy a clear picture of the different injections and Neural Therapy techniques. The text is succinct and limited to the most essential details in indications, materials and technique. It describes the point of insertion, the direction of the needle and the injection depth. This clear outline lets the physician find the information needed quickly and efficiently"--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

This well-illustrated book provides step-by-step guidance on the various techniques – microlaryngoscopic, fiberoptic endoscopic, and transcutaneous – that can be employed for the purpose of injection laryngoplasty, a surgical procedure in which a foreign material is injected into the vocal fold. The anatomy and function of the region are first explained, with identification of the causes and means of evaluation of glottic and neoglottic insufficiency. Advice is then provided on the choice of material for injection laryngoplasty, including absorbable and long-lasting options, on the basis of careful analysis that takes into account both the recent literature and the authors’ own experiences. Detailed descriptions of the surgical indications and different procedures follow, and for ease of reference, clear flow charts on diagnosis and indications are also included. The book concludes with chapters on the use of injection laryngoplasty specifically in the pediatric population and on postoperative care and speech therapy following the procedure. Injection Laryngoplasty will provide valuable assistance to all surgeons wishing to perform this kind of surgery.

Abstract

Long acting injections and implants improve therapy, enhance patient compliance, improve dosing convenience, and are the most appropriate formulation choice for drugs that undergo extensive first pass metabolism or that exhibit poor oral bioavailability.  An intriguing variety of technologies have been developed to provide long acting injections and implants.  Many considerations need to go into the design of these systems in order to translate a concept from the lab bench to actual therapy for a patient.  This book surveys and summarizes the field.  Topics covered in Long Acting Injections and Implants include the historical development of the field, drugs, diseases and clinical applications for long acting injections and implants, anatomy and physiology for these systems, specific injectable technologies (including lipophilic solutions, aqueous suspensions, microspheres, liposomes, in situ forming depots and self-assembling lipid formulations), specific implantable technologies (including osmotic implants, drug eluting stents and microfabricated systems), peptide, protein and vaccine delivery, sterilization, drug release testing and regulatory aspects of long acting injections and implants. This volume provides essential information for experienced development professionals but was also written to be useful for scientists just beginning work in the field and for others who need an understanding of long acting injections and implants.  This book will also be ideal as a graduate textbook. Dr. Jeremy Wright is a Principal Engineer at the DURECT Corporation in Cupertino, California.  He has over 30 years of experience in the development of drug delivery systems.  He has been a key contributor to the development of implantable osmotic systems for veterinary and human use (DUROS®) and is currently involved in research and development of injectable depot systems.  Dr. Wright is the inventor on over 50 patents.   Dr. Diane J. Burgess is Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics, at the University of Connecticut.  Her research efforts focus on gene and drug delivery and she has over 140 refereed publications. Dr. Burgess was the 2010 President of the Controlled Release Society (CRS), the 2002 President of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and is a CRS, AAPS and an American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) fellow.  She  is editor of the International Journal of Pharmaceutics.

Abstract

This book offers an excellent and comprehensive overview on the clinical use of fillers in aesthetic medicine. It is designed to assist dermatologists and plastic surgeons, as well as cosmetic practitioners, in the planning and performance of aesthetic medical treatment and will be invaluable for both novices and advanced users.   Based on an evidence-based perspective, the book opens by describing the most common fillers, with information on their characteristics, efficacy and safety. The main part of the book then explains how to use fillers for the most frequent facial indications, such as the glabella, nasolabial folds, infraorbital hollow, nose, cheeks, lips and marionette lines. This new edition also includes a chapter on extrafacial indications, such as augmentation of the aging hand and a new comprehensive chapter on treatment planning. All specific aesthetic procedures for the facial and extrafacial areas are described step by step, with the emphasis on a hands-on approach that highlights important do’s and don’ts. The book concludes with chapters on how to deal with adverse reactions and how to combine fillers with other aesthetic procedures, ranging from botulinum toxin A to plastic surgery.

Abstract

Joint injection is a particularly beneficial treatment for inflammatory and degenerative conditions in the upper and lower extremities and the spine. The technique is effective for managing pain after other treatments have failed and, though the procedure has historically been performed by orthopedists, physiatrists, rheumatologists and interventional radiologists, the ease with which injection procedures can be integrated into a physician’s practice have led to increased interest from family and sports medicine doctors. Injection Procedures: Osteoarthritis and Related Conditions is focused on practical, step-by-step guidelines to performing image-guided injection procedures. It includes pearls and pitfalls, useful images from real procedures, and documentation templates for including information in a patient’s medical record. With chapters dedicated to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot in addition to practical chapters on incorporating these procedures into a daily practice, this book is a comprehensive handbook for any physician interested in offering injection procedures as an option to his or her patients.
