Nel mondo romano, la città è lo spazio dell’uomo e riassume in sé, attraverso l’accostamento di singoli luoghi specifici, la dimensione pubblica e quella privata; così, come, in scala, accade all’interno di ogni casa romana, luogo della vita intima, quotidiana e familiare, allo stesso tempo aperto ad una funzione in qualche modo pubblica e sociale, accogliendo gruppi selezionati di parenti, amici, clientes, colleghi, tutti testimoni dello stato sociale del dominus. In una prospettiva storica e archeologica, l’abitazione privata diventa così un vero e proprio “fossile guida” nello studio della vita quotidiana e ben si presta ad affrontare problematiche inerenti alle conoscenze tecnologiche delle maestranze specializzate, alle mode del tempo, allo status del proprietario, al suo grado di acculturazione e romanizzazione, alle sue abitudini e ai suoi gusti. Atria longa patescunt conduce questo tipo di riflessione sull’ampio areale cisalpino, e lo fa muovendo dalla schedatura informatica dei siti, dalla stesura di planimetrie di fase e dall’analisi di categorie tipologico-funzionali e tecnico-esecutive. Diviene così disponibile, grazie alla sinergia tra enti diversi e alla disponibilità delle singole Soprintendenze dei Beni Archeologici, un patrimonio di dati finora sparsi tra carte d’archivio e pubblicazioni di svariato genere e consistenza.
