Over a long period, Italian scholars discussed the norm of an Italian standard language. Finally, the language of Florentine poets of the 14th century emerged as winner in this competition of various models. Based on texts from the 13th to the 17th centuries, this book shows that in reflections on language norm, also Northern Italian dialects and common languages were frequently described, assessed and in part even defended as counter-model to the Tuscan language.
