Der vorliegende Band bietet die erste umfassende Beschreibung der italienischen Wortbildung des 20. Jahrhunderts in all ihren nicht-dialektalen Varietäten. Das Augenmerk liegt auf den produktiven Mustern. Neben den zentralen Gebieten Komposition und Derivation werden auch die Grenzbereiche zu Semantik und Syntax sowie marginalere Verfahren wie Siglen, Mischwörter usw. gebührend berücksichtigt. Die einzelnen Gebiete werden von 19 ausgewiesenen Experten aus Italien, Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz behandelt, nicht wenige werden zum ersten Mal detailliert beschrieben. Obwohl es sich um eine Beschreibung handelt, die höchsten wissenschaftlichen Ansprüchen genügen will, haben sich die Autoren um eine möglichst allgemein verständliche Sprache bemüht, damit das Buch nicht nur von Linguisten, sondern auch von einem breiteren Publikum gewinnbringend konsultiert werden kann. This volume presents the first comprehensive description of 20th century Italian word formation in all its non-dialectal aspects. The main focus is on productive patterns. Alongside the central concern with composition and derivation, there is also due reference to frontier areas between word formation proper, semantics, and syntax, as well as to more marginal formation patterns like abbreviations and portmanteau words. The various facets are dealt with by 19 qualified experts from Italy, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, and a number of them are described in detail here for the first time. Although this description sets out to satisfy the highest standards of scholarship, the authors have been at pains to make their contributions as generally comprehensible as possible. Accordingly, the book can be profitably consulted not only by professional linguists but also by a wider audience.

A venticinque anni dall'uscita di un testo che forniva per la prima volta uno sguardo complessivo sull'italiano contemporaneo e le sue varietà secondo una prospettiva sociolinguistica, ne viene ora presentata una revisione aggiornata che tiene conto del notevole incremento delle conoscenze accumulatesi sul tema durante un quarto di secolo. La nuova edizione mantiene l'articolazione complessiva e tutto il testo dell'edizione originale, eliminandovi alcuni errori e dettagli marginali e migliorandone singole formulazioni. A ogni capitolo è stato aggiunto un nuovo sotto capitolo dedicato a un aggiornamento contenutistico e bibliografico degli snodi principali dei temi toccati.
