Abstract

Dorothea M. Salzer studies the use of biblical quotations and allusions in the Hebrew and Aramaic magical texts which were found among the manuscripts from the Cairo Genizah. Although allusions to the Hebrew Bible are extant and important in almost all of these magical texts, they have never before been subjected to a thorough and comprehensive analysis. Against the backdrop of the theory of intertextuality, Dorothea Salzer describes how the authors of these texts used biblical quotations and other allusions for magical and rhetorical purposes. She explains the significance of these allusions for understanding the strucuture and meaning of the medieval magical texts. The appendix lists the biblical quotations/allusions referred to in the analysed texts which all date from the 10th to the 16th century..

Abstract

Thus Speaks Ishtar is a collection of essays about prophets and prophecy in the ancient Near East during the “Neo-Assyrian Period.” This was the time when some of Israel’s greatest prophets emerged, and we also have from the same general period a number of prophetic texts found on the site of the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. The book examines the basic idea of prophecy and how this is shaped by the way we study the subject, and it then presents a number of fresh insights on a range of prophetic topics. These include the relationship between Israelite and other forms of prophecy in Assyria and Egypt and the relationship between what prophets said and the written forms in which their words were passed on. Other topics of contemporary interest include what these prophetic texts have to say about the environment, the place of intercession in Israelite and Assyrian religion, and whether the message of the trailblazing Israelite prophets of the eighth century was basically about judgment and community ruin or about hope and community well-being.

Abstract

Many Jewish texts from the Second Temple and rabbinic periods seem to reflect the view that Israelite prophecy ceased around the beginning of the Second Temple era. Stephen Cook examines these writings in order to identify attitudes about the status of prophets and prophecy throughout the Second Temple period, and also to address the question of whether scholars today should view prophecy as having ceased in that era. The author first presents the key passages from antiquity, along with a summary of the seminal discussions of these texts from the last 150 years. He then analyzes each of the relevant ancient bodies of Jewish literature, and isolates key streams of thought within ancient Judaism which help address the question of how prophecy's status was viewed. In a third part, he finally addresses the question of whether it is appropriate today to hold that Israelite prophecy ceased in antiquity.
