Récit fondateur de la culture iranienne, épopée mythique et historique, le Shâhnâmeh ou Livre des Rois, a été composé en persan au début du XIe siècle par le poète Ferdowsi. L’ampleur des épisodes décrits, depuis la création du monde et la naissance de la civilisation persane préislamique jusqu’à la conquête arabe de l’Iran au milieu du VIIe siècle, en fait une œuvre sans équivalent dans la littérature mondiale.Copié et enluminé de façon presque ininterrompue, il donna naissance à un corpus de plusieurs milliers de manuscrits et à certaines des plus belles miniatures de l’histoire de l’art persan.Près de deux siècles après la publication de la traduction en prose du Livre des Rois par Jules Mohl, Pierre Lecoq propose la première traduction française intégrale en vers de cette œuvre majeure de la littérature persane. Son texte allie la rigueur historique et philologique à la restitution des rimes et du souffle épique de l’original persan, pour le plus grand plaisir des lecteurs.L’ouvrage est enluminé des cinquante miniatures d’un manuscrit safavide du XVIe siècle, ainsi que de dessins originaux de Scott Pennor’s. Il comporte un index des noms propres.

This Memorial Volume is dedicated to one of the most prolific and renowned scholars in the field of Iranian Studies, the late Professor Ronald E. Emmerick, who held the chair of Iranian Studies in Hamburg until his untimely death in 2001. The volume consists of thirty-three papers, written by some of the foremost scholars in the field of Iranian Studies.
