This title was first published in 2003. The essay collection explores the conjunctions of nation, gender, and visual representation in a number of countries-including Ireland, Scotland, Britain, Canada, Finland, Russia and Germany-during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The contributors show visual imagery to be a particularly productive focus for analysing the intersections of nation and gender, since the nation and nationalism, as abstract concepts, have to be "embodied" in ways that make them imaginable, especially through the means of art. They explore how allegorical female figures personify the nation across a wide range of visual media, from sculpture to political cartoons and how national architectures may also be gendered. They show how through such representations, art reveals the ethno-cultural bases of nationalisms. Through the study of such images, the essays in this volume cast new light on the significance of gender in the construction of nationalist ideology and the constitution of the nation-state. In tackling the conjunctions of nation, gender and visual representation, the case studies presented in this publication can be seen to provide exciting new perspectives on the study of nations, of gender and the history of art. The range of countries chosen and the variety of images scrutinised create a broad arena for further debate.

L’intérêt de cette recherche est double. Premièrement, ce mémoire tente de comprendre comment la ségrégation résidentielle peut être vue comme un facteur déterminant dans les disparités d’accès à la santé. La recherche récente et encore pauvre sur le sujet crée donc une lacune dans le domaine, lacune que nous avons voulu combler en prenant l’exemple de Schaerbeek. Les facteurs contextuels et individuels liés à la ségrégation et générateurs de disparités dans l’accès à la santé sont appliqués à la réalité de Schaerbeek, à Bruxelles. L’utilité de la recherche est donc d’aborder la ségrégation résidentielle comme un vecteur d’exclusion sociale, en prenant la dimension de l’accès à la santé. 

Le deuxième objectif de ce mémoire est d’analyser la ségrégation comme un marqueur social d’inégalités au sens entendu par l’intersectionnalité. A notre connaissance, cet angle d’approche n’a encore jamais été adopté. L’intérêt est donc de croiser deux champs d’études : intersectionnalité et ségrégation. Le lieu de résidence, quand il admet des hauts niveaux de ségrégation, est déjà un facteur qui a des conséquences sur la vie des individus qui la subissent mais la ségrégation résidentielle n’a pas toujours des impacts négatifs sur la population ségréguée. Les discriminations dépendent de l’interaction de plusieurs facteurs, notamment la race et la classe sociale. L’approche intersectionnelle tente d’analyser les discriminations multiples qui proviennent de l’interaction entre différents marqueurs sociaux qui se conjuguent à une discrimination originelle : celle d’être une femme. Être une femme, migrante, issue de la classe la plus pauvre sont trois facteurs qui interagissent et produisent des discriminations co-constitutives. A ces trois marqueurs, nous soutenons que l’on peut ajouter celui du lieu de résidence lorsqu’il est spatialement ségrégué. 
Ce mémoire évalue donc la ségrégation résidentielle à Bruxelles et les facteurs liés à cette ségrégation qui peuvent avoir des conséquences sur l'accès à la santé. Ceci tout en adoptant, in fine, une approche intersectionnelle.

The journal aims to be a leading source of scholarly research into how we might understand the idea and application of 'intersectionality'.
