The essays of this volume are mainly lectures given at the international conference held at the Center for Intercultural Theology and the Study of Religion at the University of Salzburg on the occasion of Raimon Panikkars 100th birthday. They look at the life and thought of this outstanding pioneer of interreligious dialogue – already by descendancy rooted in two cultures and religions (Europe and Asia, Christianity and Hinduism) - not only from theological, philosophical, religious studies and spiritual perspectives, but also from a biographical-personal view and investigate into the relevance and inspiration of his life and works for today. Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes sind zum großen Teil Vorträge, die auf der Internationalen Fachtagung anlässlich des 100. Geburtstags Raimon Panikkars (1918-2010) am Zentrum Theologie Interkulturell und Studium der Religionen der Universität Salzburg gehalten wurden. Sie schauen nicht nur von theologischen, philosophischen, religionswissenschaftlichen und spirituellen Gesichtspunkten auf das Leben und Denken dieses großen Pioniers des interreligiösen Dialogs, der schon durch seine Herkunft in zwei Kulturen und Religionen (Europa und Asien, Christentum und Hinduismus) verwurzelt war, sondern auch von einem biographisch-persönlichen Gesichtspunkt aus und fragen nach der Relevanz und Inspirationskraft seines Lebens und Werks für die heutige Zeit.

La polémique religieuse représente une page importante dans l’histoire des relations entre juifs et chrétiens. L’Antiquité en a laissé de nombreux témoignages littéraires, dont des dialogues mettant aux prises un juif et un chrétien. Ces textes se présentent en général comme des comptesrendus de débats réels. Les deux adversaires discutent sur les points essentiels de désaccord : Jésus est-il le Messie ? L’Évangile s’est-il substitué à la Loi juive ? Qui, des juifs ou des chrétiens, est le peuple de Dieu ? Mais, composés par des chrétiens, ces dialogues ont toujours pour but de montrer la supériorité du christianisme. Ils sont adressés avant tout aux chrétiens et servent à les instruire dans la foi. Le Dialogue de Timothée et Aquila, composé par un auteur inconnu, peut-être sous le règne de Justinien (vie s.), constitue, en grec, le témoin le plus important de ce genre littéraire dans l’Antiquité tardive. Le texte se présente comme la relation d’un débat organisé à Alexandrie entre le chrétien Timothée et le juif Aquila. Au terme d’une controverse consacrée avant tout à la question du Christ, le juif admet sa défaite et reçoit le baptême. Reflétant davantage une discussion idéale qu’une controverse réelle, le texte est un témoignage capital sur la façon dont les chrétiens se représentaient leur position par rapport au judaïsme à la fin de l’Antiquité. Cet ouvrage offre la première traduction française du dialogue dans sa forme longue, munie d’une introduction et d’un index biblique.

At the present time, when so-called Islamic radicalism, terrorism and Jihadism occupy major media space, with Islam often depicted as the main culprit, the book attempts a tour de force. It proposes that Islam is as much victim as culprit in the history that has led to the current hostility. This is because the common claims of both mainstream and radical Islam that Islam represents the high point of the Abrahamic tradition, and therefore a purification of Judaism and Christianity, have been largely ignored, misunderstood or blatantly rejected by these faiths and therefore by ‘the West’ in general. This rejection has effectively rendered Islam as the poor cousin, if not the illegitimate sibling, of the tradition. In turn, this has created long-term resentment and hostility within Islam as well as robbed the ‘Judaeo-Christian West’ of a rich, inter-faith understanding of the wider Abrahamic tradition. The book explores these claims through textual, historical and theological analyses, proposing that many of them stand up better to critical scrutiny than has been commonly acknowledged. It further proposes that seeing Islam in this way has potential to re-awaken its self-understanding as a leader of accord among the Abrahamic faiths, of the kind that characterized the era of Convivencia when, in medieval Spain, Islam constructed and contributed to advanced civilizations characterized by relatively harmonious co-existence between Muslims, Christians and Jews. The book focuses on the role that a more respected and self-confident Islam could play in forging enhanced inter-faith relations in a world that desperately needs them as it struggles to understand and deal with modern and particularly vicious forms of radical Islamism.
