Abstract

Internet network neutrality is one of the most contested issues in communications law today. Those in opposition maintain that the rights of network owners are at stake. Supporters argue that the Internet's open architecture is at risk as are the rights of Internet users to freely publish and access information. Despite this connection to free speech, up to this point there has been little discussion about the First Amendment implications of network neutrality. Using the idea of a right of access to the media, Bagwell uncovers legal precedent that would give First Amendment support to network

Abstract

The year 2000 initiated a decade of spectacular growth in the information and communication technology sector in developing countries. Almost 75 percent of the world's mobile telephone subscriptions are in low- and middle-income countries, which have also promoted exciting innovations and realized significant economic development benefits. However, the adoption and use of broadband technology is another matter. Countries in North America and the European Union account for more than 50 percent of the world's 1 billion fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions, but South Asia and Sub-Saharan Afri

Abstract

Abstract

This book presents a comprehensive view of Internet intermediaries, their economic and social function, development and prospects, benefits and costs, and roles and responsibilities. Divided into three parts, Part I, The Economic and Social Role of Internet Intermediaries, develops a common definition and understanding of what Internet intermediaries are, of their economic function and economic models, of recent market developments, and discusses the economic and social uses that these actors satisfy. Part II, The Role of Internet Intermediaries in Advancing Public Policy Objectives, examines the roles and responsibilities of Internet intermediaries in advancing public policy objectives, as well as the costs and benefits of their involvement through a series of case studies. Part III provides a summary of an experts workshop that identified lessons learned and best practices from the experience to date of Internet intermediaries in advancing public policy objectives.
