Abstract

Computational elastohydrodynamics, a part of tribology, has existed happily enough for about fifty years without the use of accurate models for the rheology of the liquids used as lubricants. For low molecular weight liquids, such as low viscosity mineral oils, it has been possible to calculate, with precision, the film thickness in a concentrated contact provided that the pressure and temperature are relatively low, even when the pressure variation of viscosity is not accurately modelled in detail. Other successes have been more qualitative in nature, using effective properties which come f

Abstract

In this monograph we present a review of a number of recent results on the motion of a classical body immersed in an infinitely extended medium and subjected to the action of an external force. We investigate this topic in the framework of mathematical physics by focusing mainly on the class of purely Hamiltonian systems, for which very few results are available. We discuss two cases: when the medium is a gas and when it is a fluid. In the first case, the aim is to obtain microscopic models of viscous friction. In the second, we seek to underline some non-trivial features of the motion. Far from giving a general survey on the subject, which is very rich and complex from both a phenomenological and theoretical point of view, we focus on some fairly simple models that can be studied rigorously, thus providing a first step towards a mathematical description of viscous friction. In some cases, we restrict ourselves to studying the problem at a heuristic level, or we present the main ideas, discussing only some aspects of the proof if it is prohibitively technical. This book is principally addressed to researchers or PhD students who are interested in this or related fields of mathematical physics.

Abstract

The need for properties is ever increasing to make processes more economical. A good survey of the viscosity data, its critical evaluation and correlation would help design engineers, scientists and technologists in their areas of interest. This type of work assumes more importance as the amount of experimental work in collection and correlation of properties such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, heat capacities, etc has reduced drastically both at the industry, universities, and national laboratories. One of the c o-authors, Professor Viswanath, co-authored a book jointly with Dr. Natarajan “Data Book on the Viscosity of Liquids” in 1989 which mainly presented collected and evaluated liquid viscosity data from the literature. Although it is one of its kinds in the field, Prof. Viswanath recognized that the design engineers, scientists and technologists should have a better understanding of theories, experimental procedures, and operational aspects of viscometers. Also, rarely the data are readily available at the conditions that are necessary for design of the equipment or for other calculations. Therefore, the data must be interpolated or extrapolated using the existing literature data and using appropriate correlations or models. We have tried to address these issues in this book.

Abstract

Drawing together literature from a variety of fields, Food Texture and Viscosity, 2E, includes a brief history of this area and its basic principles. It reviews how texture and viscosity are measured, including the physical interactions between the human body and food, objective methods of texture measurements, the latest advances in texture-measuring instruments, various types of liquid flow, and more. This revised edition contains approximately 30% new material, including two new chapters on physics and texture and the correlation between physical measurements and sensory asse
