Abstract

Jonis Hartmann unternimmt in vorliegender Untersuchung den Versuch, Entwurfswerkzeuge jenseits von Stift und Papier begrifflich einzuführen. Sie setzen a priori an und begleiten den Entwurf geistig. Im Gegensatz zum "genialischen Moment" des Entwerfens sind sie übertragbar, regelhaft und verbalisierbar. Der Autor erläutert ihre Existenz und Konstituierung phänomenologisch anhand gebauter Beispiele und weist auf ihren aktiven Einsatz in Bereichen wie bspw. dem klimabewussten Bauen hin. Wiederkehr und Mehrdeutigkeit als Entwurfswerkzeuge wirken steuerbar auf das Entwerfen ein und steigern die insgesamte Entwurfskompetenz. Sie sind erlernbar, anwendbar und essentiell bei der Übersetzung einer zunächst dunklen, kreativen, noch unarchitektonischen Idee in komplexe, lesbare, öffentliche Architektur. Sie basieren auf systematisierten Erfahrungswerten beim Entwerfen und ermöglichen den Aufbau architektonischer Grammatik. This book discusses the effect of different school building rehabilitation strategies on the classrooms’ indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and presents a multi-objective methodology for school building enclosure optimization combining artificial neural networks and lifecycle costs. The special features of this book are that it (a) presents the state-of-the-art in school building rehabilitation, (b) covers the IEQ assessment of several school buildings, including non-rehabilitated and rehabilitated according to different strategies; and (c) proposes a multi-objective optimization procedure. The rehabilitation of a school building should be regarded as a procedure combining a number of (sometimes conflicting) variables and objectives, including energy, IEQ and costs (initial, operational and maintenance), in the search for an “optimum solution.” The main benefit of the book is that it discusses the main topics related to school building rehabilitation, presents results of the IEQ assessment on 9 school buildings and launches a discussion on how the “in-use” performance of schools is key to understanding how designed performance is actually experienced. It maps the most commonly used multi-objective algorithms and artificial neural network architectures and proposes a methodology for combining these numerical tools with dynamic building simulations and lifecycle cost analysis to optimize school building enclosures. This methodology will be of value to scientists and engineers alike, while also addressing a variety of related disciplines, such as civil and mechanical engineering, architecture and mathematics.

Abstract

This book explores how the design characteristics of homes can support or suppress individuals’ attempts to create meaning in their lives, which in turn, impacts well-being and delineates the production of health, income, and educational disparities within homes and communities. According to the author, the physical realities of living space—such as how kitchen layouts restrict cooking, the size of social areas limits gatherings with friends, and dining tables represent aspirations—have a salient connection to the beliefs, culture, and happiness of the individuals in the space. The book’s purpose is to examine the human capacity to create meaning and to rally home mediators (scholars, educators, design practitioners, policy makes, and advocates) to work toward culturally enriched communities in which everyone can thrive. The volume includes stories from Hmong, Somali, Mexican, Ojibwe, and African American individuals living in Minnesota to show how space intersects with race, gender, citizenship, ability, religion, and ethnicity to posit that social inequalities are partially spacially constructed and are, therefore, malleable.

Abstract

Abstract

As humans embark upon the next phase of Space exploration—establishing human outposts in low-Earth orbit, on the Moon, and on Mars—the scope of human factors must expand beyond the meager requirements for short-term missions to Space to include issues of comfort and well-being necessary for long-term durations. However, to habitate—to dwell in a place—implies more than creature comforts in order to adapt. Human factors research must also include a phenomenological perspective – an understanding of how we experience the places we live in – in order for a community to be robust and to thrive.   The first phase of migration will be an especially tenuous one requiring intensive technological intervention. The modes by which those technologies are implemented will have significant bearing on the process of human adaptation: the nature of the mediation can be either one of domination, subordination, avoidance, or integration. Ultimately, adaptation is best ensured if symbiotic processes of negotiation and cooperation between subject and environment are espoused over acts of conquest or acquiescence.   These adaptive mechanisms will have wider implications for long-range human evolution. Migration to extraterrestrial environments will be unequivocally the most profound catalyst for evolution in the history of humankind—not only for the human species itself but also for the new environments we will eventually inhabit. At the same time, humans are also—via a new generation of bio-, nano-, and digital technologies—in the position to consciously and willfully direct evolution. Technology has always been transformative, but in the not-so-distant future, humans will soon possess the capacity for radical re-invention in almost any way conceivable.
