Im Mittelpunkt dieser Monographie steht die Frage, wie mit multimodalen Mitteln komplexe Bewegungsabläufe angeleitet werden: Wie werden Bewegungen verbalisiert, demonstriert und interaktional konstituiert bzw. im Raum verankert? Welche begleitenden sprachlichen und nicht-sprachlichen Handlungen werden durchgeführt? Wie wird beispielsweise korrigiert? Wie wird Bewegen als soziale Praxis gerahmt? Dieses Fragengeflecht wird anhand des Beispiels der Pilates-Methode, eines komplexen Bewegungsprogramms, unter Berücksichtigung von drei verschiedenen Materialtypen erörtert: direkte Trainingseinheiten, Ratgeberbücher und Trainingsvideos. Aus diesen medialen und situativen Bedingungen ergeben sich sehr unterschiedliche Instruktionsprofile, denen auch mehrere Arten bzw. theoretische Konzeptionen von Multimodalität zugrunde liegen. Im Fokus der qualitativen und quantitativen Analysen stehen Formen und Funktionen von zahlreichen multimodalen Ressourcen. Die Integration von verschiedenen Traditionen der Multimodalitätsforschung ermöglicht ein vertieftes Verständnis von Praktiken der Bewegungsinstruktion als interaktive Hervorbringung und bietet viele Anknüpfungspunkte für multiperspektivische Analysen von Multimodalität. The Pilates method serves as the situational context. Using linguistic analysis methods and with the help of many example analyses, the practices of instructing in training sessions, guidebooks, and training videos are compared.

Encounters between people of diverse religious faiths and worldviews are becoming more common in an increasingly globalized and mobile world. Research has not, however, kept pace by investigating how people talk about their faith with others who believe differently. This monograph addresses that deficit by taking an emergent path, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis to investigate and understand multilingual speakers' discursive behaviors in multiparty interreligious dialogues. Using 33 hours of recordings from conversations across seven research sites, Sauer Bredvik investigates how speakers’ multilanguaging practices interact with other indexical and referential signs (unfilled pauses, disfluency, pragmatic markers) to affect how constitute messages are understood. By combining corpus-assisted discourse analysis with emic data taken from observation and 11 hours of participant interviews, one is able to identify distinct patterns of use between these metalinguistic indicators and a dialogue outcome. Readers will gain an understanding of how people of various linguistic and faith backgrounds use all their semiotic resources to display hospitality and respect for the Other in multilingual, multifaith settings.

Die vorliegenden Beiträge spiegeln dabei die Bandbreite ihrer langjährigen Forschung wider, die von der Analyse grammatischer Strukturen interaktionaler Sprache - wie z.B. This chapter analyzes some of the discursive interactions through which a 13-year-old francophone Cameroonian student attempts to construct new social and academic identities. It builds on research on the situated co-construction of micro-interactional identities and macro-social categories such as ethnicity and race. The chapter illustrates the disjunctive interplays of visibility and invisibility that characterize the trajectory of a Cameroonian immigrant student, Aline, as she moves through new diasporic and educational spaces in Cape Town. It examines Aline's gradual invisibilization as an indexical process achieved through a set of inter-related semiotic phenomena such as those identified by Bucholtz and Hall: explicit use of identity labels, implicatures and presuppositions regarding identity positions, and evaluative and epistemic stances in relation to ongoing talk. The chapter also analyzes, first, how stances are interdiscursively achieved or disbarred and, second, how the accretion and/or absence of stances over time have longer lasting consequences, helping to construct more durable social categories.

Drawing on data from a range of contexts, including classrooms, pharmacy consultations, tutoring sessions, and video-game playing, and a range of languages including English, German, French, Danish and Icelandic, the studies in this volume address challenges suggested by these questions: What kinds of interactional resources do L2 users draw on to participate competently and creatively in their L2 encounters? And how useful is conversation analysis in capturing the specific development of individuals’ interactional competencies in specific practices across time? Rather than treating participants in L2 interactions as deficient speakers, the book begins with the assumption that those who interact using a second language possess interactional competencies. The studies set out to identify what these competencies are and how they change across time. By doing so, they address some of the difficult and yet unresolved issues that arise when it comes to comparing actions or practices across different moments in time.
