Abstract

"Heinricus Institoris is the major author of the Malleus Maleficarum, the best known early-modern textbook on witchcraft. This work was heavily influenced by Institoris's activities as inquisitor in Ravensburg in 1484 and Innsbruck in 1485. This volume contains the only complete translations of a large number of documents pertaining to these inquisitions, and is a companion to a new (and the only complete) edition of these texts, which shed much light on the composition of the Malleus Maleficarum in general".

Abstract

"This is the companion volume to the author's "An Unusual Inquisition": Translated Documents from Heinricus Institoris's Witch Hunts in Ravensburg and Innsbruck (Brill, 2020), and contains a full edition of the Latin and German documents illustrating Heinricus Institoris's activities as prosecutor of witchcraft in Ravensburg in 1484 and Innsbruck in 1485. These events had a great influence on Institoris's composition of the Malleus Maleficarum, the most famous and influential early-modern textbook on witchcraft. This is the only full and complete edition of these documents, some of which have not previously been published in their entirety, and the texts greatly illuminate the historical setting of the composition of one of history's most notorious books"--

Abstract

What was witchcraft? Were witches real? How should witches be identified? How should they be judged? Towards the end of the middle ages these were serious and important questions - and completely new. Between 1430 and 1500, a number of learned 'witch-theorists' attempted to provide the answers to such questions, and of these perhaps the most famous are the Dominican inquisitors Heinrich Institoris and Jacob Sprenger, the authors of the Malleus Maleficarum, or The Hammer of Witches. The Malleus is widely recognised as an important medieval text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Yet as a source the Malleus presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and cannot be said to be representative of late medieval learned thinking in general. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual world of its authors. Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches. Ultimately, this book argues that although the Malleus was a highly idiosyncratic text, with a view of witches very different from that of competing authors, its arguments were powerfully compelling and therefore remained influential long after alternatives were forgotten. Consequently, although focused on a single text, this study has important implications for fifteenth-century witchcraft theory. This is a fascinating work on the Malleus and will be essential to students and academics of late medieval and early modern history, religion and witchcraft studies.

Abstract

In 1501, the Alsatian inquisitor and witch-hunter Heinrich Institoris (Kramer) was pursuing Hussites in Moravia. As part of his anti-heretical campaign, he published a pamphlet exalting the stigmatization of Lucia Brocadelli of Narni. In this pamphlet, he also praised the mystical experiences of other contemporary Italian women mystics. The present volume explores the story of this pamphlet – the motivations for its publication, its contents, its circulation, and its influence – and provides the first critical edition of its intriguing text. The intersection of female sanctity and the anxiety over diabolic witchcraft, Christian heterodoxy, Jewish obstinacy, and the growing Turkish threat provides the pamphlet’s compelling backstory. Thus, this book argues that the pamphlet crystallized some of the major religious, cultural, and politico-military concerns that prevailed in Europe shortly before the breakup of Western Christendom.
