These short poems, one hundred in number, meditate on religious life, its patterns of deep darkness and gleaming light. Sarah Law has been inspired by the Carmelite nun Saint Therese of Lisieux (1873-97) for many years and in this collection blurs the borders of self and saint. The poems follow a loosely chronological and biographical trajectory, drawing on sparks of image and memory. The resulting work is intimate, lyrical, and innovative, and by turns dreamlike, confessional, passionate, and poignant. The whole forms a chapel from poetic threads and fragments of faith.

This book is a cluster of poems transpired by the whispers of a vision derived from a series of insights--sometimes crazily inspired by William Wordsworth, many a time minutely invoked by Ezra Pound. Life offers situations that are purely mystic--while in the midst of a freezing wrath, one may discover soul-saving songs from specs of sand, warm beneath the feet, there are times when honeymoon enterprises turn precarious.Interestingly, it is the latter that most of us get poignantly stuck to--the reason possibly being Melancholic notes--based on some form of a collective consciousness. In case of the former, maybe it is then when the wise, enlightened, brightest intellect metamorphoses into Wordsworth. While sunflowers are enchanting, albeit seldom seen, Shukla Bhattacharya's poetry sunnily reminisces, echoing a pleasing choreography of moral convictions. Get set with your casket; fetch the perennial power of a beaming solitude; soak into the therapeutic, fascinating warmth of worthy insights!

The poems in The Long Journey Out offer glimpses of the transcendent and ineffable--heightened rhapsodic perceptions arising from earlier, more empirical, observations. The world they describe is richly varied, culturally, spiritually, and linguistically. Yet threaded throughout his lyrical journey are these numinous moments, not yet explicable in doctrine but in empathic intuitions poetry can serve. Having learned from his travels, the journeyer is freed to return home, confident that despite our socioeconomic and political fractures, everyday human existence is grounded in a shared, sacred mystery.
