"Imagines Italicae, edited by M.H. Crawford and colleagues, is the outcome of a research project based in the combined library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies and of the Institute of Classical Studies, beginning in 2002 and initially supported by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council. The empire created by Rome underlies many of the structures of modern Europe, and that empire in turn was in its early stages the joint creation of Rome and the other peoples of Italy. Almost the only records left by those peoples themselves consist of the texts they inscribed and the coinages they produced. Imagines Italicae provides for the first time a complete corpus of those texts which are in one or other of the Italic languages, accompanied by photographs or drawings, a critical apparatus, an English translation where possible, a bibliography, and a full account of their discovery and archaeological context. The corpus, geographically arranged, contains 982 entries in total, lavishly illustrated, some of them multiple, preceded by a substantial Introduction, and completed by an Appendix of Italic names occurring in Greek texts, detailed Concordances, and full epigraphic indexes. The work is in a very real sense both that of the authors and of the 80 or so museums and libraries that welcomed the authors and helped them in every way possible, so as to enable them for the project to study and photograph their holdings; in subscribing to the work, you will both gain access to those holdings and also support the provision to each and every one of the museums and libraries in question of a copy of the work. It is a work that will make it possible for the first time to understand the complex linguistic geography of ancient Italy and to address crucial historical questions about the religion, culture, society, economy, and institutions of the peoples of Italy."--

Epigrafia Italica 2 si occupa dei documenti inscritti in antico su lapidi, bronzo, terracotta, e manufatti di varia natura, pervenutici dai popoli che hanno abitato e, bisogna dire, civilizzato l'Italia. L'opera, di grande impegno, appartiene ad una disciplina che resta, nonostante tutto, una novità: il nuovo è rappresentato dalla qualifica che fa riferimento agli Italici, che sono tuttavia anche i Latini, con i Romani, nei primi momenti della loro storia, e gli Etruschi, come risulta evidente nell'opera che qui si presenta quale seconda edizione, notevolmente ampliata, emendata dove occorre, e arricchita di nuovi, rilevanti, testi. Questi popoli Italici fanno sentire fra noi la loro voce con quanto ci hanno tramandato nei loro documenti epigrafici; per quanto riguarda gli Etruschi si tratta di una storia interrotta e ricostruibile con enormi difficoltà, per altri si può invece scrivere e parlare di "contemporaneità" perché il loro messaggio è tuttora presente, e presente a tutti gli effetti in due delle loro lingue ancora in uso, il latino e il celtico; di quest'ultimo, pur fuori dei nostri confini nazionali, abbiamo tra Lombardia e Piemonte i più antichi documenti inscritti, come vedremo alle singole attestazioni epigrafiche. Non poche parole nella lingua parlata ci vengono da questi popoli scomparsi oppure assimilati nel mondo romano-latino. Messapi, Piceni, Siculi, Veneti, con Osci, Umbri, Reti e Camuni, trovano in Epigrafia Italica 2, come già nella prima edizione del 1982, la ribalta a cui il pubblico degli studiosi, e non solo, può guardare, affrontando, insieme all'Autore, gli enigmi e le rivelazioni che l'impegno nella ricerca porta in primo piano. Allora si trattò di una novità importante, come dimostra il rapido esaurirsi della edizione, ma ancora adesso l'intrapresa si presenta con le sue caratteristiche innovative. Con quest'opera l'Autore descrive una documentazione che è lecito definire "ufficiale", anche quando è particolare e personale, come avviene quasi sempre nei titoli funerari, ricchi questi tuttavia di dati di interesse generale, per definire, accanto ai grandi testi, il quadro linguistico, etnico e culturale dell'Italia antica prima di Roma
