Abstract

Resistivity and induced polarization methods are used for a wide range of near-surface applications, including hydrogeology, civil engineering and archaeology, as well as emerging applications in the agricultural and plant sciences. This comprehensive reference text covers both theory and practice of resistivity and induced polarization methods, demonstrating how to measure, model and interpret data in both the laboratory and the field. Marking the 100 year anniversary of the seminal work of Conrad Schlumberger (1920), the book covers historical development of electrical geophysics, electrical properties of geological materials, instrumentation, acquisition and modelling, and includes case studies that capture applications to societally relevant problems. The book is also supported by a full suite of forward and inverse modelling tools, allowing the reader to apply the techniques to a wide range of applications using digital datasets provided online. This is a valuable reference for graduate students, researchers and practitioners interested in near-surface geophysics.

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to develop a new approach in the implementation of the minimum gradient support regularization operator, applied to a time-domain induced polarization problem. Indeed, this promising functional has not been enough implemented in real and large surveys yet. It is mainly confined to research studies applied to synthetic cases, although it can often offer significant advantages compared to the traditional smooth inversions, according to Occam's principle. The resistivity and induced polarization data was acquired during a geophysical campaign in Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia, on the largest known gold resource of the country. The deposit is an Intrusion Related Gold system, characterized by polarizable sulphides minerals. Four long profiles were realized on the contact zone between a magmatic intrusive and the hosting sediment formations, which is a zone of interest concerning gold mineralizations. By implementing different inversion approaches and tuning the focusing parameter, the a-priori information has revealed itself as being of uttermost importance on the process convergence towards a stable and realistic solution, and a methodology is therefore established.

Abstract

Due to the overconsumption and the insufficient waste management in the past, old landfills are today part of the Belgian landscapes. Besides the growing interest in old landfills from an environmental perspective, their exploitation, in terms of material extraction and reuse, perfectly adheres to the growing concept of circular economy and is further supported by the benefits coming from land recovery. The characterization of landfills is consequently becoming an operation key nowadays. The present master thesis tends to evaluate the pertinence of three different geophysical methods for the characterization of a former landfill located in Onoz. For this purpose, 2D and 3D models of physical properties are computed. The Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and the Induced Polarization (IP) enables the detection of highly conductive lenses of lime and ashes within a layer of backfill and waste. Moreover, in the northern part of the landfill, the transition between the bedrock and the overlying waste layer is being brought to light. Unfortunately, in the southern part of the landfill, both methods show an overestimation of the highly conductive lime and ashes body, which impacts the detection of the bedrock, in the 3D models as well as in the 2D models. This limitation of the methods was expected thanks to the synthetic model previously computed, avoiding any misinterpretation even in the absence of an adequate model appraisal tool. The Horizontal to Vertical Noise Spectral Ratio (HVNSR) demonstrates different uses in the landfill characterization. Firstly, in the lower part of the site, the HVNSR is used to delineate the different waste zones by simply crossing the information from the H/V graphs obtained with the boreholes. In the upper part of the site, the HVNSR is combined with two available boreholes in order to compute the approximate average shear wave velocity of the lime and ashes. Following some assumptions, it is possible to calculate the thickness of the layers of lime and ashes, allowing the approximation of their total volume in this zone.

Abstract

This Special Issue contains ten papers which focus on emerging geophysical techniques for mineral exploration, novel modeling, and interpretation methods, including joint inversions of multi physics data, and challenging case studies. The papers cover a wide range of mineral deposits, including banded iron formations, epithermal gold–silver–copper–iron–molybdenum deposits, iron-oxide–copper–gold deposits, and prospecting forgroundwater resources.
