"Le décret Si quis suadente en 1131 est le premier cas réservé connu : il définit une excommunication ipso facto contre ceux qui frappent un clerc et en réserve l'absolution au pape. À la fin du XIIe siècle, les évêques à leur tour excluent les « plus grands péchés » de la compétence pénitentielle des prêtres de paroisse. Le nombre de « cas réservés » ne fait que croître jusqu'à la fin du Moyen Âge : la papauté comme l'épiscopat y trouvent un moyen d'affirmer leur autorité. Leur étude met en valeur la construction de la hiérarchie de l'Église, notamment par les formes de mobilisation du for de la pénitence. À l'échelon diocésain, cette catégorie permet aux évêques d'affirmer les spécificités de leur ministère, par leurs compétences pénitentielles qui en font des relais de la grâce divine.
