Abstract

Medical and industrial imaging methods have become powerful tools in both the documentation and data collection procedures found in many non-traditional settings. In this book, two of the most preeminent experts in the field serve as volume editors providing an in-depth examination of the current and growing range of imaging tools and techniques currently available on the market. These editors and their contributing authors--top practitioners in the field--explain how these techniques can be applied to all aspects of forensic and archaeological analysis. In addition to providing useful data for analysis, these powerful tools have the added benefit of being non-destructive, thereby preserving the remains or artifact for future analysis with yet-to-be developed technologies. The authors began this work to provide a basis for understanding the application of various imaging modalities in archaeological, anthropological, bioanthropological, and forensic settings. Filled with over 350 images, the writing draws on the editors' global experience in the paleoimaging of cultural remains and artifacts, offering a view of the diverse environments in which field paleoimaging is conducted. The book will be an essential reference for conservators, museum archivists, forensic anthropologists, paleopathologists, archaeologists, and anyone looking to gather imaging information and perform non-destructive research on historical or culturally significant artifacts, remains, or in the process of a forensic investigation. -- Provided by publisher

Abstract

This volume brings together new lines of research across a range of disciplines from participants in a workshop held at Wolfson College, Oxford, on 23rd May 2017. In light of rapid technological developments in digital imaging, the aim in gathering these contributions together is to inform specialist and general readers about some of the ways in which imaging technologies are transforming the study and presentation of archaeological and cultural artefacts. The periods, materials, geography, and research questions under discussion therefore are varied, but the contributions are united in shared interests surrounding the aims of these techniques for imaging objects: what advantages do they offer, whether in research or museum contexts, what limitations are still faced, and how can technological development encourage new types of research and public engagement?

Abstract

The accompanying title to the major interactive exhibition at the British Museum: Ancient lives, new discoveries. What secrets lie beneath the wrappings of an ancient Egyptian mummy? In recent years, British Museum curators have collaborated with scientists and medical experts to find new ways of studying ancient Egyptian mummies. New non- invasive scanning techniques have produced astonishing results, allowing us to understand more clearly how people lived and died in the ancient Nile Valley. Eight significant mummies are ‘explored’, each carefully selected to tell a different story. They include a young female temple singer, an unknown man of high status, and a child from the Roman era.CT scans have revealed a wealth of information, such as the health problems that the individual must have suffered during life, age at death and sometimes cause of death, the manner of mummification and on occasion irregularities in the process. Funerary objects are also highlighted for context: for example, contents of canopic jars; analyses of embalming substances, and identification of wood species and pigment types used in coffins. The majority of the material is drawn from the British Museum’s extensive Egypt and Sudan collections. With over 200 specially commissioned photographs, Ancient lives, new discoveries is a thorough and informative read.
