Histories are important and histories have a way of travelling.West Indies is one example of a society constructed artificially of imported populations, who have gone on to build their own power structures, political histories and national identities. The Caribbean is one such society where multiculturalism has been put to test. This book is an attempt to understand Caribbean histories, patterns of migration and race relations. It is a collection of essays by Caribbean writers like V.S.Naipaul, Paule Marshall, Jean Rhys, Austin Clarke, Caryl Phillips and Cyril Dabydeen. The essays in this book have taken up most of the representative authors of the Caribbean, either by addressing their work or through contributions by the writers themselves. The attempt has been to provide a chronological history of the Caribbean and to give representation to writers living now in different host cultures. Some papers are gender-oriented and locate the position of the women in the West Indies.

This collection of essays by scholars from Canada, Croatia, India, Italy and Israel maps an important aspect of Canadian culture by exploring the inherent relation between space and questions of subjectivity. Location at first stood out in Canadian Literature because survival depended on control of the land; today owing to the technological advances that have eased human exploitation of the ground and its resources, and to some extent enhanced protection against adverse climatic conditions, the preoccupation with space has shifted to incorporate other realities. As manifest in contemporary writing throughout Canada, humans interact with place in order to strengthen their sense of belonging and selfhood. The essays in Mapping Canadian Cultural Space examine a variety of literary texts by writers from different origins – whether old-timers or newcomers – all aiming at contextualizing subjecthood.

The theoretical innovations of Edward Said, Homi Bhabha, Gayatri Spivak, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, James Clifford and others have in recent years vitalized postcolonial and diaspora studies, challenging ways in which we understand 'culture' and developing new ways of thinking beyond the confines of the nation state. The articles in this volume look at recent developments in diasporic literature and theory, alluding to the work of seminal diaspora theoreticians, but also interrogating such thinkers in the light of recent cultural production (including literature, film and visual art) as well as recent world events. The articles are organized in pairs, offering alternative perspectives on crucial aspects of diaspora theory today: Celebration or Melancholy?; Gender Biases and the Canon of Diasporic Literature; Diasporas of Violence and Terror; Time, Place and Diasporic "Home"; and, Border Crossings. A number of the articles are illustrated by discussions of particular authors, such as Caryl Phillips, Salman Rushdie, and Michael Ondaatje, and the range of reference found in this volume covers writing from many parts of the world including contemporary Chicana visual art, Asian diaspora writers, and Black British, Afro-Caribbean, Native North American, and African writing.
