Iamblichus' Babyloniaca, now lost, was an extensive novel of great interest to the study of ancient prose narrative. This book presents a critical edition of the testimonies (especially the epitome drawn up by Photius I in the 9th century) and of numerous surviving fragments, translated for the first time into Italian. These texts have been revised and updated in the light of the critical debate that has occurred since their last publication decades ago (the Teubner edition of E. Habrich). The collation of the manuscripts of the epitome and the principal fragments has allowed for the creation of a constitutio textus, to which is added a revised ordering of the fragments in relation to the plot of the narrative. Finally, the mystery of the alleged survival of the novel in its entirety to the end of the 18th century is addressed, and a new solution is proposed to this vexata quaestio.
