Abstract

Reproductive aging is a natural and universal process. Women frequently overestimate the age at which a significant decline in fertility occurs as well as overestimate the success of assisted reproductive technologies to circumvent age-related infertility. Yet there is much that modern medicine can do to improve conception rates in women who delay childbearing and to manage subsequent pregnancies. This book offers guidance on winning strategies for maximizing the live-birth rate and limiting the risk for women trying to conceive later in life. It is intended to assist in navigating this challenging journey and lead to peace of mind that women have been seen, heard, and treated as individuals in the process. Written by leading experts addressing medical options of applying advanced reproductive technologies, psychological, nutritional, lifestyle, systematic approaches to optimizing fertility care for the most challenging demographic of women in a practical, clinically orientated, and most importantly, positive way.

Abstract

Reproductive medicine and surgery is a major subspecialty in the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology. This textbook provides an introduction to the field of subfertility and reproductive endocrinology, with contributions written by leading experts in the field. This book is based on and compliments a training programme run jointly by the British Fertility Society and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, making it an indispensable handbook for medical trainees. It will also appeal to clinicians embarking on a career in obstetrics and gynaecology who want an excellent grounding in this area. Specialist nurses will also find the book a valuable resource, and scientists specialising in reproductive medicine and embryology will gain insight into the related clinical areas.

Abstract

Subject: The theme of fertility is a very complex one, where several variables cross each other to provide different results. First, this study is based on the analysis of the reviews about the possible link between stress and fertility. Then the results are compared with the opinion of a population sample. There are any preconceived ideas on this subject among the population and these may sometimes be an impediment for the patients to access a relevant information. Stress will be defined with precision. Hans Selye’s definition has been selected: “a reactive state of the organism subject to a physical or physiological stimulus”. Methods: A meta-analysis has been carried out on the basis of exits from English and French scientific literature. The perception and knowledge of a sample in the Belgian French speaking population on the subject of fertility and its link with stress will be collected by means of a survey. Objectives: The conclusions of the different articles will be compared looking for a consensus. We hope that this study will help direct future research. A comparison between the population’s opinion and the literature will be done. Results: During the literary analysis, we noted the existence of many divergences of opinion between the authors and consequently the fact that few came to the same conclusion. There is also a difference of method that makes it difficult to establish and efficient comparison. Stress is analyzed under different forms: anxiety, depression, the experiences of negative events, the salivary rate of cortisol and amylase … It is therefore complicated to compare several conclusions that do not deal with the same variables. The utilized means also differ: populations are not the same and the samples are sometimes insufficient to establish generalities. As far as the survey is concerned, it can already be mentioned that the theme is very complex and leads to very different answers within the questioned sample of people. First of all, the opinions regarding the definition of stress are divided. It proves that the conception of stress is not the same for everyone. Therefore if we question people on its possible impact on procreation, it is not surprising to get varying opinions. The vast majority agrees to say that stress reduces fertility. However, the degree of influence does not lead to an unanimous answer. The, items gathering diverse sates and experiences evets have been submitted. It was asked whether they could affect fertility. The result is that no item leads to 100% agreement. A divergence of opinions can therefore also be observed on this dimension.
