Abstract

Scars develop in the final stage of wound healing. Wound healing and scarring involve complex biological pathways, and the exact mechanisms by which they are initiated, evolved, and regulated remain to be fully elucidated. Scarless wound healing is a major goal of medical science. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to elucidate the relevant clinical, histopathological, and molecular manifestations of scars, and to understand how these manifestations relate to each other. This Special Issue covers a selection of recent research topics and current review articles in the field of scar research for all kinds of tissues and organs.

Abstract

This unique medical guide focuses on scars. The impact of scars is often underestimated and rarely discussed, and they are considered an inevitable side effect of surgery or trauma. Although therapies for distressing scars do exist, many are based on myths rather than evidence. This strongly practice-oriented book provides step-by-step instructions with scales and measuring instruments for assessing scars. Featuring brief abstracts and summaries, this valuable reference resource benefits clinical professionals such as doctors and nurses alike. It will appeal to practitioners who want to understand the nature and background of planned treatments, and to non-experts who simply want to broaden their medical horizons.

Abstract

This text book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. Written by a group of international experts in the field and the result of over ten years of collaboration, it allows students and readers to gain to gain a detailed understanding of scar and wound treatment – a topic still dispersed among various disciplines. The content is divided into three parts for easy reference. The first part focuses on the fundamentals of scar management, including assessment and evaluation procedures, classification, tools for accurate measurement of all scar-related elements (volume density, color, vascularization), descriptions of the different evaluation scales. It also features chapters on the best practices in electronic-file storage for clinical reevaluation and telemedicine procedures for safe remote evaluation. The second section offers a comprehensive review of treatment and evidence-based technologies, presenting a consensus of the various available guidelines (silicone, surgery, chemical injections, mechanical tools for scar stabilization, lasers). The third part evaluates the full range of emerging technologies offered to physicians as alternative or complementary solutions for wound healing (mechanical, chemical, anti-proliferation). Textbook on Scar Management will appeal to trainees, fellows, residents and physicians dealing with scar management in plastic surgery, dermatology, surgery and oncology, as well as to nurses and general practitioners.

Abstract

Humans can resist 40 days without eating and 4 days without drinking, but only 4 minutes without breathing: this tells us much about its fundamental importance. Restoring an efficient nasal function is a very important – and in some cases crucial – issue. This book describes an innovative surgical technique called modified inferior turbinoplasty, which offers an excellent solution to the problems associated with the lower turbinate hypertrophy. A turbinate (or nasal concha) is a long, narrow, curled bone shelf that protrudes into the breathing passage of the nose. Most surgical interventions treat only the soft parts of hypertrophic turbinates and often lead to relapse. With this technique, in contrast, all anatomic parts of the turbinate are treated and swabs in the nose are completely avoided, which is fundamental for patients well-being and a quicker recovery. The book will be very useful for othorinolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, endoscopic and maxillofacial surgeons.
