Dans ces deux essais, la notion de grammaire des espèces est mise à l'épreuve dans l'usage qu'en fait le cinéma. Le propre du cinéma, comme art et technique, est de travailler en premier lieu sur la mise en visibilité des sujets humains en tant que corps. Ici surgit d'emblée l'enjeu des phénotypes, c'est-à-dire de la relation qui s'établit dans le champ du visuel et de l'observable entre un corps singulier, un groupe de corps humains, et une catégorie. La grammaire des espèces, au cinéma, c'est le mode d'épinglage, de classification et de hiérarchisation des sujets-corps selon leurs propriétés phénotypiques : la présentation d'un corps sur le mode propre à le faire apparaître comme ce qu'il est supposé être. Cette opération a des conséquences lourdes et irréversibles. Les logiques de la grammaire des espèces et l'esprit de la démocratie moderne ne font pas bon ménage. Comment le cinéma se fraie-t-il un chemin entre les premières et le second ? Telle est l'interrogation au cœur de cet ouvrage.

In dit boek figureert het filmmedium als het onbewuste van de cultuur. Het wordt door de auteur serieus genomen als kunstvorm met een waarde op zichzelf, maar tegelijk opgevat als een neerslag van symptomen en effecten van culturele dilemma’s en taboes. De auteur kijkt naar films, maar kijkt er ook doorheen. Met een blik getraind in hedendaagse kunst en dans interpreteert hij films van zulke uiteenlopende regisseurs als Steve McQueen en Nicolas Provost, Ursula Antoniak en Michael Haneke, Tobe Hooper en Ilya Chrzjanovski, Lars von Trier en Chantal Akerman, Gus Van Sant en Erik Poppe. Een belangrijk thema is de wijze waarop menselijke verlangens zich manifesteren in een choreografie van bewegende lichamen door stedelijke structuren van staal, steen en beton. De stad is een luchtspiegeling vol vibraties en resonanties van lichaam en steen. Een luchtspiegeling die zichzelf blijft voeden met de opbrengsten van de economie van vervulling en verlangen. De individuele figuur zoekt autonomie in haar individuele cel, of gaat juist naar buiten uit eenzaamheid of verlangen naar contact. Welke frustraties en verlangens spelen een rol in de interacties tussen man en vrouw? Enkele belangrijke films van de laatste twintig jaar – zoals Antichrist, Code Blue, Shame, La Pianiste – wagen zich nadrukkelijk in dit relationele moeras, waar de liefde tussen man en vrouw vaak gepaard gaat met alledaagse manifestaties van haat en soms extreme vormen van geweld. Lichaam en steen zoekt naar de troebele bronnen hiervan. Het relationele geweld houdt verband met het explosieve mengsel van wrok, haat en woede dat in de hedendaagse samenleving zo’n grote rol is gaan spelen. Momenteel heeft iedere burger of groep wel een reden om zich miskend te voelen en in te pluggen op dit altijd beschikbare potentieel van de haat. Films als Elephant en Utøya 22. Juli bijvoorbeeld benaderen terrorisme als een singulariteit van de haat die alleen indirect gerepresenteerd kan worden, door de kern ervan juist buiten beeld te houden.
