Exploring this interplay, Guy Métraux shows how the depiction of physiological processes gave statues and reliefs their animating force and how many medical and philosophical speculations about the body were derived from depictions in art. Voyage autour et à l'intérieur du corps humain, cet ouvrage en éclaire systématiquement l'univers culturel et symbolique. Du point de vue historique, il décrit comment les connaissances en anatomie représentent des états successifs d'une compréhension globale du corps qui, domaine et instrument de l'être humain, a conditionné sa manière même de voir et d'interpréter le monde environnant. Dans quasiment toutes les civilisations, démontre un des chapitres, il est devenu le modèle même de l'univers et, parfois, l'image du dieu créateur (Vishnou, Bouddha, Pan-Ku, Tangaroa, Christ Pantocrator, Zodiaques, etc.). Cela a donné lieu à un riche symbolisme, et les différentes parties du corps ont été investies de valeurs tellement puissantes qu'elles sont quotidiennement utilisées comme métaphores (avoir " du cœur " ou " de l'estomac "), véritables hypostases de sentiments, d'attitudes ou de caractères, ainsi facilement illustrées, tous décrits ici. Pour s'en tenir aux temps historiques, une autre partie traite des différentes solutions formelles apportées à la représentation du corps humain à travers le Temps. Pour que notre panorama soit complet, notre voyage devait s'orienter vers d'autres horizons culturels, notamment des civilisations non-européennes où, malgré les importantes différences qui les séparent de la nôtre, se découvrent d'insoupçonnables consonances.
