Abstract

"Holocaust artworks intuitively must fulfill at least two criteria: artistic (lest they be merely historical documents) and historical (lest they distort the Holocaust or become merely artworks). The Sense of Semblance locates this problematic within philosophical aesthetics, as a version of the conflict between aesthetic autonomy and heteronomy, and argues that Adorno's dialectic of aesthetic semblance describes the normative demand that artworks maintain a dynamic tension between the two. The Sense of Semblance aims to move beyond familiar debates surrounding postmodernism by demonstrating the usefulness of contemporary theories of meaning and understanding, including those from the analytic tradition. Pickford shows how the causal theory of names, the philosophy of tacit knowledge, the analytic philosophy of quotation, Sartre's theory of the imaginary, the epistemology of testimony, and Walter Benjamin's dialectical image can help explicate how individual artworks fulfill artistic and historical desiderata. In close readings of Celan's poetry, Holocaust memorials in Berlin, the quotational artist Heimrad Backer, Claude Lanzmann's film Shoah, and Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus, Pickford offers interpretations that, in their precision, specificity, and clarity, inaugurate a dialogue between contemporary analytic philosophy and contemporary art. The Sense of Semblance is the first book to incorporate contemporary analytic philosophy in interpretations of art and architecture, literature, and film about the Holocaust"--

Abstract

Many of us belong to communities that have been scarred by terrible calamities. And many of us come from families that have suffered grievous losses. How we reflect on these legacies of loss and the ways they inform each other are the questions Laura Levitt takes up in this provocative and passionate book. An American Jew whose family was not directly affected by the Holocaust, Levitt grapples with the challenges of contending with ordinary Jewish loss. She suggests that although the memory of the Holocaust may seem to overshadow all other kinds of loss for American Jews, it can also open up p

Abstract

The book explores representations of the Holocaust in contemporary art practices. Through carefully selected art projects, the author illuminates the specific historical, cultural, and political circumstances that influence the way we speak—or do not speak—about the Holocaust. The book's international focus brings into view film projects made by key artists reflecting critically upon forms of Holocaust memory in a variety of geographical contexts. Kékesi connects the ethical implications of the memory of the Holocaust with a critical analysis of contemporary societies, focusing upon artists who are deeply engaged in doing both of the above within three regions: Eastern Europe (especially Poland), Germany, and Israel. The case studies apply current methods of contemporary art theory, unfolding their implications in terms of memory politics and social critique.

Abstract

Representations of the Holocaust changed dramatically in the 1990s, when film, literature, and works of visual art attracted international attention by provoking scandals. Holocaust art turned to genres and styles that had traditionally been considered taboo. This change raises many questions: Why the widespread provocation? Why are representational rules being broken at the turn of the millennium - rules that have been respected and observed for decades? What should we make of art of this kind? The contributors to this volume address these (and other) questions. They juxtapose conventional depictions of the Holocaust with recent works of art which reveal shifting paradigms in the fields of visual art, literature, film, pop culture, and aesthetic theory.

Abstract

Sites of the Uncanny: Paul Celan, Specularity and the Visual Arts is the first book-length study that examines Celan's impact on visual culture. Exploring poetry's relation to film, painting and architecture, this study tracks the transformation of Celan in postwar German culture and shows the extent to which his poetics accompany the country's memory politics after the Holocaust. The book posits a new theoretical model of the Holocaustal uncanny - evolving out of a crossing between Celan, Freud, Heidegger and Levinas - that provides a map for entering other modes of Holocaust representations. After probing Celan's critique of the uncanny in Heidegger, this study shifts to the translation of Celan's uncanny poetics in Resnais' film Night and Fog, Kiefer's art and Libeskind's architecture.
