Un livre. Que savons-nous de l'histoire de cet objet prodigieux, fruit de l'esprit et de la rencontre d'innombrables savoir-faire? S'offrant pour la réflexion autant que pour la rêverie, le livre imprimé est jugé tantôt chef-d'oeuvre tantôt bien quelconque; il peut être couvert d'éloges ou de critiques, mais aussi contrôlé, censuré parfois. S'acquérant à grands frais ou pour presque rien, il est quelquefois volé, souvent collectionné, classé... mais aussi pilonné. Son histoire, longue et complexe, restituée avec subtilité et vigueur, nous rappelle que, de l'aube de l'imprimerie jusqu'au XXIe siècle, il n'a cessé de révolutionner les pratiques d'écriture et de lecture, de bouleverser les langues et l'univers des images, et qu'il marque matériellement et idéologiquement les sociétés, les imaginaires, les mémoires

Fifteenth-century Bologna is one of the major Italian cities, home to a prestigious university and thriving industrial and economic center; in these conditions, ideal for the development of the early typographic art, the market of the manuscript book, with its world of copyists, illuminators, bookbinders, stationaries, soon adapts to the new way of production, fostering between XV and XVI century the emergence of some great families of booksellers-printers-publishers. Since the first decades of the sixteenth century, however, an overwhelming foreign book production is increasingly present on bolognese market: important printers like Vincenzo Valgrisi and Gabriele Giolito establish branches in the city, while in the law book sector the Lyonese publishing industry of Giunti is gaining momentum. The situation changes again in the second half of the century, when the market is remodeled following the conditioning by the ecclesiastical authorities and it extends to social strata previously excluded from cultural consumption. The work, which is based on a detailed investigation of the documentary sources, reconstructs for the first time a social history of the Bolognese book trade, both outlining the events of families and shops operating in the city, and opening the look at the relationships with the large foreign firms.

In deze visuele geschiedenis zijn werken bijeengebracht die de canon van meer dan vijfhonderd jaar westerse boekvormgeving illustreren. Het gedrukte boek is in al zijn gedaanten te zien: als naslagwerk en kunstwerk, als machine à lire en beeldboek, en als prestigeboek en wegwerppocket. Er is werk opgenomen van beroemde drukkers uit de handpersperiode — Nicolas Jenson, Aldus Manutius, Christoff el Plantijn, de Elzeviers, John Baskerville, Giambattista Bodoni — en van toonaangevende ontwerpers uit de moderne tijd — William Morris, El Lissitzky, Jan Tschichold, Paul Rand, Massin, Irma Boom. Verder is er bijzonder geïllustreerd werk in opgenomen van architecten en kunstenaars als Giovanni Battista Piranesi en Maria Sibylla Merian.
