Cette étude entend esquisser une histoire sociale de ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler maintenant "le champ littéraire africain". A rebours de l'historiographie classique, cette histoire analyse les conditions dans lesquelles la littérature africaine a pu se constituer, depuis, au moins, les années 1930 jusqu'à aujourd'hui, en un monde social autonome, dont les auteurs et leurs textes bénéficient d'un statut institutionnel à part entière dans le vaste marché des biens symboliques.D'un point de vue pratique, les propriétés générales de ce champ reposent principalement sur les catégories dites "orales" et "traditionnelles". Ainsi, loin d'être invariablement le prolongement d'une "âme nègre" selon les approximations d'une vieille anthropologie coloniale et africaniste, l'oralité et la tradition servent aux agents du champ africain dans leur besoin de positionnement structural : aux pionniers (Césaire/Senghor) pour le maintien de leur position de "dominants", aux prétendants (Zadi/Pacéré) pour leur prétention à la classicité.Objets d'enjeux et lieux de tension, stratégiquement porteurs et symboliquement riches en ressources, les items oraux et traditionnels subissent toutes sortes d'amplifications, de grossissement et d'extrapolation. En tout état de cause, l'acte littéraire en Afrique ou en francophonie, comme l'acte politique ou économique est un "acte calculé" dont la rationalité, pour être saisie, nécessite une parfaite application de ce que le vocabulaire bourdieusien nomme la "sociologie des champs symboliques".

Historiography and identity III: Carolingian Approaches is the third volume of a series of six, which aims to study the relationship between the writing of history and the construction of identity from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Taken together, these volumes hope to recover the potential that historiography developed to articulate and shape strategies of identification in the ancient, late ancient, and medieval worlds. The third volume explores this history in Carolingian Europe from the 8th to the 10th century, which was crucial time for the definition of the cultural landscape of Latin Europe in the Middle Ages. Historiography and identity III: Carolingian approaches ist der dritte Band einer Reihe, die sich in sechs Bänden mit dem Verhältnis von Geschichtsschreibung und Identitätskonstruktion von der Antike bis zum Ende des Mittelalters beschäftigt. Dabei wollen die Bände genauer der Geschichte der Geschichtsschreibung nachgehen, wie, wann und warum sie Bedeutung für die Artikulation und Affirmation von Identitäten erlangte. Der dritte Band widmet sich der Erforschung dieser Prozesse in der Karolingerzeit, einer Zeit, die für die Formierung des lateinischen Westens eine prägende Rolle spielte.
