"These include television's radically new ecology; with factual formats a growth area. Docudrama in film has also burgeoned recently, partly because the industries themselves have grown closer and partly because of continued interest in the lives of the famous and of those in the news. International co-production now exploits many different screening opportunities and possibilities, with the result that docudrama and become a cinematic as well as televisual staple. Docudrama is not only popular with audiences; it also causes constant flurries of commentary and controversy. Concerns about 'borders' and 'boundaries', a questioning of documentary's claim to represent the real, doubts about the popular audience's ability to cope with new approaches to the ideas of witness, testimony and confession, authenticity and truth - all fuel the debate. "This second edition of No Other Way To Tell It defines the form, analyses its codes and conventions, and reviews contrasting histories in America and British practice - taking into account new developments since the first edition.

Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) is recognized as one of the leading German-speaking prose writers but she began her writing with historical tragedies. For the first time, this edition presents a complete and critical genesis of the texts, based on handwritten manuscripts and printed versions. It provides the two completed tragedies with their textual changes and her authorized version as well as the historical plays that remained fragments: »Maria Stuart in Schottland«, »Marie Roland«, »Richelieu« und »Jacobäa«. With the exception of the virtual ruler of France, Richelieu, Ebner-Eschenbach chose as heroines powerful women in historically turbulent times and portrayed them in their greatness and weakness, thereby providing an alternate female perspective on history.

The Polish writer Zofia Kossak (1889-1968) wrote historical novels with which she tried to overcome the traumas of the 20th century: two wars, the October Revolution, imprisonment in KL Auschwitz and the loss of her homeland. The contributors deal with individual and collective experiences, with human loneliness in the face of the great story, focusing on the prose works and autobiographical notes of the writer who is considered a traditionalist both in terms of narrative style and idea content. However, the interpretations proposed here, based on contemporary literary theories, break with stereotypical thinking and shed new light on Zofia Kossak's work by drawing attention to what she perceived in her immediate surroundings, what preoccupied her and what is also part of the problems of the 21st century: totalitarianism, loss of homeland, the significance of the past for the present or concern for the environment in the face of necessary industrial development.
