Abstract

Bringing together 15 Maps realized between 2003 and 2016 by Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn (born 1957), this book focuses on this particular aspect of his practice that could be seen as a matrix to understand his unique position within the art world and visual culture. As he explains: "With my Maps, I want to make clear I have a goal, that I am also a maker, and not only a thinker." Edited by Julie Enckell Julliard, the publication reproduces each Map in detail, showing their combination of printed matter, text fragments, artist's comments and collaged press images. Acting as an archive of projects, Hirschhorn's Maps are simultaneously tools to clarify his thinking, memorials to inspirational figures, manifestos about topics such as "Friendship Bewtween Art and Philosophy," as well as a way to resist. Published all together, they provide a remarkable insight into the uncompromising art Hirschhorn has been building consistently for 30 years.

Abstract

For the artist Thomas Hirschhorn, writing is a crucial tool at every stage of his artistic practice. From the first sketch of an idea to appeals to potential collaborators, from detailed documentation of projects to post-disassembly analysis, Hirschhorn's writings mark the trajectories of his work. This volume collects Hirschhorn's widely scattered texts, presenting many in English for the first time. In these writings, Hirschhorn discusses the full range of his art, from works on paper to the massive Presence and Production projects in public spaces. “Statements and Letters” address broad themes of aesthetic philosophy, politics, and art historical commitments. “Projects” consider specific artworks or exhibitions. “Interviews” capture the artist in dialogue with Benjamin Buchloh, Jacques Rancière, and others. Throughout, certain continuities emerge : Hirschhorn's commitment to quotidian materials ; the centrality of political and economic thinking in his work ; and his commitment to art in the public sphere. Taken together, the texts serve to trace the artist's ideas and artistic strategies over the past two decades. Critical Laboratory also reproduces, in color, 33 Ausstellungen im öffentlichen Raum 1998–1989, an out-of-print catalog of Hirschhorn's earliest works in public space.

Abstract

Published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Swiss Pavilion of the 2011 Venice Biennale, "Establishing a Critical Corpus" is the first theoretical book to extensively examine the practice and artworks of Thomas Hirschhorn. His work elicits debate, analysis, and a profound discussion of artistic and social issues. "Establishing a Critical Corpus" is thus a charged and intense "textbook," providing texts and topics "to think about": Hirschhorn's work in general, a specific part of his work, one of his pieces, issues that extend beyond his work, and so on. These fully illustrated texts constitute the core of the book.

Abstract

Part-text, part-sculpture, part-architecture, part-junk heap, Thomas Hirschhorn's often monumental but precarious works offer a commentary on the spectacle of late-capitalist consumerism and the global proliferation of commodities. Made from ephemeral materials―cardboard, foil, plastic bags, and packing tape―that the artist describes as “universal, economic, inclusive, and [without] any plus-value,” these works also engage issues of justice, power, and moral responsibility. Hirschhorn (born in Switzerland in 1957) often chooses to place his work in non-art settings, saying that he wants it to “fight for its own existence.” In this book, Anna Dezeuze offers a generously illustrated examination of Hirschhorn's Deleuze Monument (2000), the second in his series of four Monuments. Deleuze Monument―a sculpture, an altar, and a library dedicated to Gilles Deleuze―was conceived as a work open to visitors twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Part of the exhibition “La Beauté” in Avignon, Deleuze Monument was controversial from the start, and it was dismantled two months before the end of the exhibition after being vandalized. Dezeuze describes the chronology of the project, including negotiations with local residents; the dynamic between affirmation and vulnerability in Hirschhorn's work; failure and ”scatter art” in the 1990s; participatory practices; and problems of presence, maintenance, and appearance, raised by Hirschhorn's acknowledgement of “error” in his discontinuous presence on site following the installation of Deleuze Monument.

Abstract

Abstract

In 2011, the Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn (born 1957) was awarded the Kurt Schwitters Prize, given annually to an artist whose work references that of Schwitters. The award enabled Hirschhorn to make two new installations in homage to Schwitters, the notes, plans and sketches for which are documented here.

Abstract

Commissioned by Dia Art Foundation, Gramsci Monument is a new artwork by Thomas Hirschhorn, taking place on the grounds of Forest Houses, a New York City Housing Authority development in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx, New York. Gramsci Monument opened on July 1 and will run through September 15, 2013. It is open seven days a week, from 10 am to 7 pm. Gramsci Monument is the fourth and last in Hirschhorn’s series of “monuments” dedicated to major writers and thinkers, which he initiated in 1999 with Spinoza Monument (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), followed by Deleuze Monument (Avignon, France, 2000) and Bataille Monument (Kassel, Germany, 2002). This fourth monument pays tribute to the Italian political theorist Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937), famous for his volume of Prison Notebooks (1926–1937). Gramsci Monument is based on Hirschhorn's will “to establish a definition of monument, to provoke encounters, to create an event, and to think Gramsci today.” Constructed by residents of Forest Houses, the artwork takes the form of an outdoor structure comprised of numerous pavilions. The pavilions include an exhibition space with historical photographs from the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome, personal objects that belonged to the philosopher from Casa Museo di Antonio Gramsci in Ghilarza, Italy, and an adjoining library holding 500 books by (and about) Gramsci loaned by the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute in New York. Other pavilions include a stage platform, a workshop area, an Internet corner, a lounge, and the Gramsci Bar—all of which are overseen by local residents. Gramsci Monument will offer a daily program of lectures by philosopher Marcus Steinweg, a children's workshop run by artist Lex Brown, a radio station, happy hour, and a daily newspaper. Weekly programs include a play titled Gramsci Theater, Gramsci Seminars led by international scholars, Poetry Lectures and Workshops led by poets and writers, Art Workshops led by Hirschhorn, open microphone events coordinated by the community, and field trips organized by the project’s “ambassador,” Dia curator, Yasmil Raymond. Hirschhorn has also created a website as part of the Gramsci Monument. It is a platform offering texts, notes, pictures, and videos documenting the process of the artwork, from its earliest sketches. The website features lives radio streaming, and will be updated daily with documentation from the daily events and philosophy lectures, as well as archived editions of the newspaper.

Abstract
