Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The present monograph grew out of the fifth set of Hermann Weyl Lectures, given by Professor Griffiths at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, in fall 1974.In Chapter 1 the author discusses Emile Borel's proof and the classical Jensen theorem, order of growth of entire analytic sets, order functions for entire holomorphic mappings, classical indicators of orders of growth, and entire functions and varieties of finite order.Chapter 2 is devoted to the appearance of curvature, and Chapter 3 considers the defect relations. The author considers the lemma on the logarithmic derivative, R. Nevanlinna's proof of the defect relation, and refinements of the classical case.

Abstract

This work is a fresh presentation of the Ahlfors-Weyl theory of holomorphic curves that takes into account some recent developments in Nevanlinna theory and several complex variables. The treatment is differential geometric throughout, and assumes no previous acquaintance with the classical theory of Nevanlinna. The main emphasis is on holomorphic curves defined over Riemann surfaces, which admit a harmonic exhaustion, and the main theorems of the subject are proved for such surfaces. The author discusses several directions for further research.

Abstract

An outrageous graphic novel that investigates key concepts in mathematicsIntegers and permutations-two of the most basic mathematical objects-are born of different fields and analyzed with different techniques. Yet when the Mathematical Sciences Investigation team of crack forensic mathematicians, led by Professor Gauss, begins its autopsies of the victims of two seemingly unrelated homicides, Arnie Integer and Daisy Permutation, they discover the most extraordinary similarities between the structures of each body.Prime Suspects is a graphic novel that takes you on a voyage of forensic discovery, exploring some of the most fundamental ideas in mathematics.Travel with Detective von Neumann as he leaves no clue unturned, from shepherds' huts in the Pyrenees to secret societies in the cafés of Paris, from the hidden codes in the music of the stones to the grisly discoveries in Finite Fields. Tremble at the ferocity of the believers in deep and rigid abstraction. Feel the pain as you work with our young heroine, Emmy Germain, as she blazes a trail for women in mathematical research and learns from Professor Gauss, the greatest forensic detective of them all.Beautifully drawn and wittily and exquisitely detailed, Prime Suspects is unique, astonishing, and outrageous-a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience mathematics like never before.

Abstract

Recent developments in diverse areas of mathematics suggest the study of a certain class of extensions of C*-algebras. Here, Ronald Douglas uses methods from homological algebra to study this collection of extensions. He first shows that equivalence classes of the extensions of the compact metrizable space X form an abelian group Ext (X). Second, he shows that the correspondence X ⃗ Ext (X) defines a homotopy invariant covariant functor which can then be used to define a generalized homology theory. Establishing the periodicity of order two, the author shows, following Atiyah, that a concrete realization of K-homology is obtained.

Abstract

Singularities of solutions of differential equations forms the common theme of these papers taken from a seminar held at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 1977-1978. While some of the lectures were devoted to the analysis of singularities, others focused on applications in spectral theory. As an introduction to the subject, this volume treats current research in the field in such a way that it can be studied with profit by the non-specialist.
