The book 'Ingressi Milanesi, designing the in-between' presents a graphical and photographic analysis of twenty well chosen entrance halls in Milanese condomini or apartment buildings, located in the Magenta and Sempione district and built between 1920 and 1970. A carefully chosen graphic expression helps to discover underlying similarities. The book concludes by bringing together elements of various uses in order to point to recurring elements and ultimately, design principles. The book is based on the research of Lisa Desager and Lisa Janssens at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of Ghent University. "Lisa Desager and Lisa Janssens' recognition and their analytic work is a precious work, not only because it contributes filling a lacuna given the scarcity in studies of this topic (for which great interest has been raised only recently) but even more so because of the scientific approach in studying the articulation of spaces and their 'modelling'. This work is, if not the first, surely one of the most in-depth analysis from the point of view of the study of architecture and its spatial inventions." Francesca Picchi, architect and writer, Milan.

In this first volume in the SCALE series, "Open / Close', a simple yet significant part of any building - the "opening" - is illustrated in all its different aspects, from idea to implementation. As well as the different types of component-windows, doors, gates, loggias, filters-this volume deals with bu.ldinq structures. It is also concerned with the significance of the "opening in building design. Openings define the relationship between a bullding and the space outside it, helping to characterize a location. In this book, all of the elements that mediate between interior and exterior spaces are classified both in terms of construction and design. Each of them is described and dealt With indetail. All the internationally renowned projects used here as examples are both practical and generally applicable. The projects have not beenchosed for their homogeneous architectural language, but for the high quality of their architecture.

Building openings provide light, ventilation and climate control for rooms. At the same time, they are essential functional and design elements of facades, enabling communication between indoor and outdoor spaces as transparent or translucent structural components. Similar to the entire building envelope, windows and exterior doors must meet exacting standards for materials, construction types and installation conditions, as well as for fire, noise and thermal insulation, energy efficiency, airtightness and building security. The Building Openings Construction Manual opens with historic developments, provides solid facts on standards and safety features. It covers materials, components, construction types and specifics of structural connections, including solutions on how to deal with existing older windows and issues of ventilation, the use of solar energy and ecological sustainability. Detailed case studies of successfully completed projects offer a wealth of constructive ideas for the reader's own work.

Till Boettger has dealt in teaching and research projects closely with the architectural staging of arrival and reception. His book is a collection of exemplary phenomenological analyzes of spatial transitions in historical and modern cultural buildings by renowned architects. It also develops a methodology to optimize threshold rooms in all construction projects.
