Our understanding of the image of the city of Rome in the 16th Century is coined materially from the drawings of Maarten van Heemskerck. He views the Roman antiquities collections as the earliest examples of their kind, and his evocative landscapes of ruins founded the subject of topographical Romvedute. Since becoming known in the late 19th Century, his drawings served as a visual source for the study of ancient sculptures and Roman ruins as well as the topography. The book provides a change in perspective, by the studies themselves at the center provides and views van Heemskerck with respect for the creativity as an imaginative artist of remarkable potential. Topics are his appropriation and transformation of artistic concepts, as well as questions of development contexts and functions, interpretation and reception.
