Abstract

'Turbulence in Porous Media' introduces the reader to the characterisation of turbulent flow, heat and mass transfer in permeable media, including analytical data and a review of available experimental data. Such transport processes occurring a relatively high velocity in permeable media are present in a number of engineering and natural flows. This new edition features a completely updated text including two new chapters exploring Turbulent Combustion and Moving Porous Media. De Lemos has expertly brought together a text that compiles, details, compares and evaluates available methodologie

Abstract

This product, consisting of a CD-ROM and a book, deals with the numerical simulation of reactive transport in porous media using the simulation package SHEMAT/Processing SHEMAT. SHEMAT (Simulator for HEat and MAss Transport) is an easy-to-use, general-purpose reactive transport simulation code for a wide variety of thermal and hydrogeological problems in two or three dimensions. The book is a richly documented manual for users of this software which discusses in detail the coded physical and chemical equations. Thus, it provides the in-depth background required by those who want to apply the code for solving advanced technical and scientific problems. The enclosed companion CD-ROM contains the software and data for all of the case studies. The software includes user-friendly pre- and post-processors which make it very easy to set up a model, run it and view the results, all from one platform. Therefore, the software is also very suitable for academic or technical "hands-on" courses for simulating flow, transport of heat and mass, and chemical reactions in porous media. You can find a link to the updated software on springer.com .

Abstract

This monograph introduces a numerical computational methodology for thermal performance modeling of cross-flow heat exchangers, with applications in chemical, refrigeration and automobile industries. This methodology allows obtaining effectiveness-number of transfer units (e-NTU) data and has been used for simulating several standard and complex flow arrangements configurations of cross-flow heat exchangers. Simulated results have been validated through comparisons with results from available exact and approximate analytical solutions. Very accurate results have been obtained over wide ranges of NTU and C* values in all cases. The proposed procedure constitutes a useful research tool for both theoretical and experimental studies of cross-flow heat exchangers. The following are the unique features of the book: - The monograph includes the computational code named HETE (Heat Exchanger Thermal Effectiveness) in Chapter 5. A version of this code is available for downloading. - The computational procedure could be used for reducing experimental data using the effectiveness - NTU (e-NTU) method in research and industrial laboratories. - Even after more than one century in heat exchanger research, the search for new flow arrangements with higher effectiveness still is an unsolved problem. The present methodology could be a useful tool in pursuing that goal.

Abstract

This book presents a new computational methodology called Computational Mass Transfer (CMT). It offers an approach to rigorously simulating the mass, heat and momentum transfer under turbulent flow conditions with the help of two newly published models, namely the C’2—εC’ model and the Reynolds  mass flux model, especially with regard to predictions of concentration, temperature and velocity distributions in chemical and related processes. The book will also allow readers to understand the interfacial phenomena accompanying the mass transfer process and methods for modeling the interfacial effect, such as the influences of Marangoni convection and Rayleigh convection. The CMT methodology is demonstrated by means of its applications to typical separation and chemical reaction processes and equipment, including distillation, absorption, adsorption and chemical reactors. Professor Kuo-Tsong Yu is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Xigang Yuan is a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, China.
