The State of Health in the EU country profiles provide a concise and policy-relevant overview of health and health systems in all EU countries, Iceland and Norway, emphasising the particular characteristics and challenges in each country. They are designed to create a means of mutual learning and voluntary exchanges that support the efforts of countries in their evidence-based policy making. Each country profile provides a short synthesis of: the health status in the country; the determinants of health, focusing on behavioural risk factors; the organisation of the health system; and the effectiveness, accessibility and resilience of the health system. The profiles are the joint work of the OECD and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, in co-operation with the European Commission.

In his day, Raphael Cilento was one of the most prominent and controversial figures in Australian medicine. As a senior medical officer in the Commonwealth and Queensland governments, he was an active participant in public health reform during the inter-war years and is best known for his vocal engagement with public discourse on the relationship between hygiene, race and Australian nationhood. Yet Cilento's work on tropical hygiene and social welfare ranged beyond Australia, especially when he served as a colonial medical officer in British Malaya and in the Mandated Territory of New Guinea. He also worked with the League of Nations Health Organization in the Pacific Islands and oversaw international social welfare programs for the United Nations. On one level, this professional mobility allowed ideas and practices of public health and government to circulate between colonial spaces of northern Australia, the Pacific Islands and Asia. On another, it meant that Cilento's Pacific colonialism and colonial experience shaped his understanding of Australian national health and welfare. Rather than attempt a comprehensive biography of Cilento, this book instead uses this border-crossing career as a means to explore several material and discursive facets of Australia's relationships to the Pacific and the world.

This collection is the result of a 2016 national leaders conference sponsored by Queen’s University to explore the prospects for a pan-Canadian healthcare innovation strategy. The conference themes were inspired by the 2015 report of the federally commissioned Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation, led by David Naylor, which examined how the federal government could support innovation. A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda features original commissioned chapters from academics and healthcare leaders addressing a range of issues such as the meaning of healthcare innovation, how a national healthcare agency and investment fund could be governed, the need for big data and evidence, adding value through Canadian supply-chain management, overcoming regulatory barriers to innovation, policy innovations for indigenous, military and elderly populations, the role of medical professions in promoting innovation, education, and the development of medical innovators. The Canadian healthcare system is so fragmented that any thought of a system-wide strategy for healthcare innovation is considered a far-distant ideal at best. This book presents a contrary view, outlining an agenda for Canadian healthcare innovation. It shows that Canada does indeed have the building blocks for innovation, and concludes that the time to act is now.
