Abstract

This book examines one of the most pervasive, but also perplexing, textual phenomena of the early modern world: the manuscript miscellany. Faced with multiple problems of definition, categorization, and (often conflicting) terminology, modern scholars have tended to dismiss the miscellany as disorganized and chaotic. Miscellaneous Order radically challenges that view by uncovering the various forms of organization and order previously hidden in early modernmanuscript books. Drawing on original literary and historical research, and examining both the materiality of early modern manuscripts and their contents, this book sheds new light on the transcriptive and archival practices of early modern Britain, as well as on the broader intellectual context of manuscriptculture and its scholarly afterlives.Based on extensive archival research, and interdisciplinary in both subject and matter, Miscellaneous Order focuses on the myriad kinds of manuscript compiled and produced in the early modern era. Showing that the miscellany was essential to the organization of knowledge across a range of genres and disciplines, from poetry to science, and from recipe books to accounts, it proposes a new model for understanding the proliferation of manuscript material in the sixteenth and seventeenthcenturies. By restoring attention to 'miscellaneous order' in this way, it shows that we have fundamentally misunderstood how early modern men and women read, wrote, and thought. Rather than a textual form characterized by an absence of order, the miscellany, it argues, operated as an epistemically andaesthetically productive system throughout the early modern period.

Abstract

An engaging, accessible introduction to reading and understanding early modern English manuscripts. This engaging book provides an essential introduction to the manuscript in early modern England. From birth to death, parish record to probate inventory, writing framed the lives of the early modern English. The book offers a detailed technical introduction to the handwriting of the period, from "secretary hand" through the "copperplate" that defined the early British Empire. Case studies trace the significance of manuscript to British cultural identity, exploring the intersections of manuscript and print, the roles of manuscript in the bureaucracy of the early modern state, and the complex practices surrounding manuscript in the lives of early modern readers and writers. Exercises offer the opportunity to practice reading and transcription, pointing to examples ranging from John Lydgate through William Wordsworth. Richly illustrated and drawing extensively on Yale University collections, this book opens the study of early modern English manuscript to a new generation of students and scholars.

Abstract

This study examines the transmission and compilation of poetic texts through manuscripts from the late-Elizabethan era through the mid-seventeenth century, paying attention to the distinctive material, social, and literary features of these documents. The study has two main focuses: the first, the particular social environments in which texts were compiled and, second, the presence within this system of a large body of (usually anonymous) rare or unique poems. Manuscripts from aristocratic, academic, and urban professional environments are examined in separate chapters that highlight particular collections. Two chapters consider the social networking within the university and London that facilitated the transmission within these environments and between them. Although the topic is addressed throughout the study, the place of rare or unique poems in manuscript collections is at the center of the final three chapters. The book as a whole argues that scholars need to pay more attention to the social life of texts in the period and to little-known or unknown rare or unique poems that represent a field of writing broader than that defined in a literary history based mainly on the products of print culture.

Abstract

Johannes Gutenberg had perfected at Mainz a workable press using movable type to print books by the 1450s at latest, an invention quickly seized upon in the Italian cities and, a bit more cautiously (by 1470), in Paris. Yet the production of manuscript books, and the careers of those who wrote them and of the artists who painted in them, continued in Paris for two centuries and more after Gutenberg?s revolution in book-making. The Rouses follow the traces of this continuity in the midst of change. They document the various stratagems that Parisian manuscript artisans eventually adopted in their attempt to survive, as the market for manuscripts and the demand for their services inexorably dwindled. In its death throes, the process ended with a brilliant supernova of gorgeous manuscripts made for the Sun King in the eighteenth century.

Abstract

Abstract

In L'art du livre en Asie Centrale de la fin du XVIe au début du XXe siècle, Marie Efthymiou sheds light on the rich cultural inheritance of the still barely known Central Asia. Commonly related to the sole persian cultural area, it appears as a rich convergence of cultural transfers and trade routes, where emerge the decisive role of North India and strong local singularities.0By a meticulous analysis of the quranic manuscripts of the Al Biruni Institute of Oriental Studies, Marie Efthymiou depicts the mutation of bookmaking, providing relevant evidences on Samarcand paper and revealing Kokand as a major centre of production. An innovative approach of the manuscripts uses traces their place in society and worshipper's everyday life.
