The current volume presents ten different studies dealing with the final stages of Hebrew book art production in medieval Iberia. Ranging from the Farhi Codex, copied and illuminated in the late 14th century, to the Philadelphia Bible, copied and illuminated in Lisbon in 1496, this volume discusses a wide scope of topics related with the production, consumption and circulation of medieval decorated Hebrew manuscripts. Among the issues discussed in this volume we highlight the role played by three distinct artistic languages (Mudéjar, Late Gothic and Renaissance) in the shapping of 15th century Sephardic illumination, the codicological specificity of some solutions in terms of layout and the relation between the layout of these manuscripts and Hebrew incunabula, the use of geometric decoration in scientific diagrams, or the afterlife of these manuscripts in Europe and Asia following the expulsion of the Jews from Iberia.

Medicine and the Inquisition offers a wide-ranging and nuanced account of the role played by the Roman, Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions in shaping medical learning and practice in the period from 1500 to 1850. Until now, learned medicine has remained a secondary subject in scholarship on Inquisitions. This volume delves into physicians’ contributions to the inquisitorial machinery as well as the persecution of medical practitioners and the censorship of books of medicine. Although they are commonly depicted as all-pervasive systems of repression, the Inquisitions emerge from these essays as complex institutions. Authors investigate how boundaries between the medical and the religious were negotiated and transgressed in different contexts. The book sheds new light on the intellectual and social world of early modern physicians, paying particular attention to how they complied with, and at times undermined, ecclesiastical control and the hierarchies of power in which the medical profession was embedded

Il presente studio si colloca all'interno di un complesso di ricerche che negli ultimi quaranta anni hanno affrontato la cultura grafica e la complessiva eredità culturale di umanisti della cerchia laurenziana, quali Angelo Poliziano, Marsilio Ficino, Bartolomeo Fonzio (libri appartenenti alla loro biblioteca, talora autografi oppure realizzati da copisti di fiducia, ma anche materiali di lavoro della più varia natura, quali appunti, schedature, commenti inediti, traditi da fascicoli autografi, talora oggetto di plurime, successive sistemazioni in forma di volume). Il lavoro ha per oggetto la ricostruzione della biblioteca di Pietro Crinito (1474-1507), lo studio della sua cultura grafica e un catalogo dettagliato di tutti i libri che gli appartennero. In assenza di inventari e disposizioni testamentarie, la raccolta libraria del Crinito à stata ricostruita attraverso un sistematico spoglio della bibliografia di riferimento, ma anche attraverso controlli diretti dei singoli fondi delle principali biblioteche in cui sono giunti materiali dell'umanista fiorentino. La ricerca ha portato al reperimento di 34 volumi di proprietà del Crinito per un totale di 64 unità codicologiche. Particolare attenzione à stata dedicata ai manoscritti autografi del Crinito che, pur distribuiti in un arco di anni ridotto dal 1486 al 1500, permettono di delineare un quadro dell'evoluzione delle sue abitudini grafiche dagli anni della formazione scolastica all'età matura. La ricerca individua l'evoluzione della scrittura e riconosce, a partire dal 1495, una svolta nelle scelte grafiche del Crinito che solo da questo momento, solo dopo lo studio degli autografi di Poliziano, adotta un modello di corsiva all'antica decisamente caratterizzato da forme di lettera e di legature di tradizione antiquaria.
