Heritopia creatively investigates the meaning of the past in the present, using Abu Simbel and other World Heritage sites as points of departure. It paves the way for a new discourse about pastness, heritage and society. In doing so, it overcomes the division between critical heritage inquiry and the world of heritage management.

This study critically examines the social processes, discussions, and contested values in Angra do Heroísmo, a World Heritage City in the Azores, Portugal. Through ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews, the author explores the implications of living in and managing a heritage site. Key topics include the aftermath of the 1980 earthquake, the nomination of Angra as a World Heritage Site, and the challenges of balancing preservation with modern development. The study highlights the dynamic forces of rhetoric, interests, and power among stakeholders, revealing political and dissonant aspects of heritage management. Tourism's role in Angra is analyzed, focusing on quality-based tourism and local identity. The thesis concludes that while some issues are unique to Angra, they also reflect universal challenges in heritage cities.
