Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Twelve years at war in Afghanistan: time for looking back and forward at a decade-long US cum NATO-led military intervention and international assistance the country's security and reconstruction. For almost twelve years now, since it all started on 11 September 2001 in the crash and dust of the falling twin towers in New York City that would lead America to launch its retaliatory invasion of the Central Asian country, and at less than two years from completing the blueprinted handover of political and security responsibilities to the Afghan government, Afghanistan, still at war, is entering yet another era of uncertainty. As Western powers rapidly disengage amid doubts about the country's future and the durability of changes achieved to date, it remains fundamentally unclear whether Afghan political and security institutions at they stand will either successfully maintain stability or will spiral down into a new era of generalised conflict and chaos. While time is running out, costs are rising and pressure increases to find a solution. How does this war end? Where do we stand in Afghanistan? And where are we going?

Abstract

"Examines Afghan women's recall of violence through memories and food practices in their homeland and its diaspora. ... reveals how the suffering and trauma of violence has been rendered socially invisible following decades of life in a war-zone."--Publishers website Although extensive literature exists on the violence of war, little attention has been given to the ways in which this violence becomes entrenched and normalized in the inner recesses of everyday life. In Afghanistan Remembers, Parin Dossa examines Afghan women?s recall of violence through memories and food practices in their homeland and its diaspora. Her work reveals how the suffering and trauma of violence has been rendered socially invisible following decades of life in a war-zone. Dossa argues that it is necessary to acknowledge the impact of violence on the familial lives of Afghan women along with their attempts at recovery under difficult circumstances. Informed by Dossa?s own story of family migration and loss, Afghanistan Remembers is a poignant ethnographic account of the trauma of war. She calls on the reader to recognize and bear witness to the impact of deeper forms of violence.
