Abstract

After having been for decades the province of a relatively small group of scholars, the Hellenistic polis has become central to the research agenda of Ancient historians more broadly. This development can be traced from the early nineties of the last century, and has picked up pace in a sustained fashion at the turn of the millennium. Recent research has started approaching the Greek polis of the centuries between Alexander and Cleopatra as a specific historical phenomenon, striving to define its most peculiar aspects from as many angles as possible, and to point to new avenues of interpretation that might contribute to recognizing its historical role. 0In this general framework, this volume attempts to explore new lines of thought, to question established ways of reading the evidence, and to take stock of recent developments. The contributors do not subscribe to any particular shared approach; on the contrary, their approaches and questions stem from many different scholarly traditions and methodologies. Rather than seeking to achieve a complete coverage, the volume provides a selection of current research agendas, in many cases offering glimpses of ongoing projects.

Abstract

After conquering one of the biggest empires the world has ever seen, Alexander the Great died prematurely in 323 B.C., without leaving a suitable heir to the throne. During the next decades his generals, thenceforth known as the Diadochoi; or Successors, unremittingly fought over the king's inheritance. The balance of power which ultimately resulted from their struggle would determine the course of events in the eastern Mediterranean for centuries to come. Despite its historical importance many aspects of the age of the Successors remain underexplored. Written by leading international specialists, the 24 contributions to this book help in remedying that situation by addressing new issues or shedding fresh light on old questions. They not only explore the written and material evidence for the epoch, the Successors' armies and military campaigns, their political ambitions and relationships with Greek cities, but they also address several social, economic, religious, numismatic, art-historical and urbanistic issues. They will significantly enhance our knowledge of the creation of the Hellenistic kingdoms as well as on the then prevailing dynastic ideas and practices.
