Abstract

Ephemeral content is a novice concept, it has taken social media platforms by a storm after it was first introduced by the infamous Snapchat, its full potential is yet to be accurately shaped due to the lack of academic interest that is keeping us from exploring the user altering effect possibilities that we could reach using the different tools that yield ephemeral content as a concept.
The research topic further focuses on identifying the different motivations of the use of ephemeral content that could potentially influence social gratification. Therefore, this thesis aimed to understand the impact of these motivations on consumer engagement highlighting the mediation effect of social gratification, while taking into account the multi-dimensionality of consumer engagement as a construct, namely the cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects. Aiming to investigate the relationships between the different variables of the research model, an online questionnaire was conducted on 125 participants. They were initially asked to recall their last interaction with ephemeral content if they had any, or how they would imagine their behavior to be in regards to the different feelings they get during the period of time when they are experiencing ephemeral content on a daily basis while knowing in the back of their heads that the content they are consuming will disappear after a certain period of time and will not likely be available for them to re-consume ever again. An in-depth quantitative analysis of the results of the questionnaire was conducted proving that indeed the motivations impact the consumer engagement with the mediating effect of social gratification. Fear of missing out, trust and immediacy appeared to be strong predictors of social gratification, this later when positive, increases the consumer engagement with the content and drives it towards the same direction. However, the study revealed that the impact of social pressure on social gratification was irrelevant and not significant due to the volume of the responses denying any kind of cognitive, emotional or behavioral effect or influence that social pressure have applied upon their decision-making process of consuming ephemeral content. However, investigating the impact of social pressure under different conditions could have given different results.
Finally, the results of the study confirmed that social gratification does not only impact the behavioral engagement but also effects the cognitive and emotional engagement of social media users and drives them towards the same direction through the use of ephemeral content. Generally speaking, the stimulation of the social gratification through the creation and/or consumption of ephemeral content does indeed result in an increase when it comes to social media users’ engagement with a particular content, type or creator.

Abstract

Capitalism and the Senses is the first edited volume to explore how the forces of capitalism are entangled with everyday sensory experience. If the senses have a history, as Karl Marx wrote, then that history is inseparable from the development of capitalism, which has both taken advantage of the senses and influenced how sensory experience has changed over time. This pioneering collection shows how seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touching have both shaped and been shaped by commercial interests from the turn of the twentieth century to our own time. From the manipulation of taste and texture in the food industry to the careful engineering of the feel of artificial fabrics, capitalist enterprises have worked to commodify the senses in a wide variety of ways. Drawing on history, anthropology, geography, and other fields, the volume’s essays analyze not only where this effort has succeeded but also where the senses have resisted control and the logic of markets. The result is an innovative ensemble that demonstrates how the drive to exploit sensorial experience for profit became a defining feature of capitalist modernity and establishes the senses as an important dimension of the history of capitalism.

Abstract

Conservative thinkers of the early Middle Ages conceived of sensual gratification as a demonic snare contrived to debase the higher faculties of humanity, and they identified pagan writing as one of the primary conduits of decadence. Two aspects of the pagan legacy were treated with particular distrust: fiction, conceived as a devious contrivance that falsified God's order; and rhetorical opulence, viewed as a vain extravagance. Writing that offered these dangerous allurements came to be known as "hermaphroditic" and, by the later Middle Ages, to be equated with homosexuality. At the margins of these developments, however, some authors began to validate fiction as a medium for truth and a source of legitimate enjoyment, while others began to explore and defend the pleasures of opulent rhetoric. Here David Rollo examines two such texts-Alain de Lille's De planctu Naturae and Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun's Roman de la Rose-arguing that their authors, in acknowledging the liberating potential of their irregular written orientations, brought about a nuanced reappraisal of homosexuality. Rollo concludes with a consideration of the influence of the latter on Chaucer's Pardoner's Prologue and Tale.

Abstract

The neuroscience of why bad habits are so hard to break—and how evidence-based strategies can help us change our behavior more effectivelyWe all have habits we’d like to break, but for many of us it can be nearly impossible to do so. There is a good reason for this: the brain is a habit-building machine. In Hard to Break, leading neuroscientist Russell Poldrack provides an engaging and authoritative account of the science of how habits are built in the brain, why they are so hard to break, and how evidence-based strategies may help us change unwanted behaviors.Hard to Break offers a clear-eyed tour of what neuroscience tells us about habit change and debunks “easy fixes” that aren’t backed by science. It explains how dopamine is essential for building habits and how the battle between habits and intentional goal-directed behaviors reflects a competition between different brain systems. Along the way, we learn how cues trigger habits; why we should make rules, not decisions; how the stimuli of the modern world hijack the brain’s habit machinery and lead to drug abuse and other addictions; and how neuroscience may one day enable us to hack our habits. Shifting from the individual to society, the book also discusses the massive habit changes that will be needed to address the biggest challenges of our time.Moving beyond the hype to offer a deeper understanding of the biology of habits in the brain, Hard to Break reveals how we might be able to make the changes we desire—and why we should have greater empathy with ourselves and others who struggle to do so.

Abstract

The world has become increasingly separated into the haves and have-nots. In The Culture of Contentment, renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith shows how a contented class-not the privileged few but the socially and economically advantaged majority-defend their comfortable status at a cost. Middle-class voting against regulation and increased taxation that would remedy pressing social ills has created a culture of immediate gratification, leading to complacency and hampering long-term progress. Only economic disaster, military action, or the eruption of an angry underclass seem capable of changing the status quo. A groundbreaking critique, The Culture of Contentment shows how the complacent majority captures the political process and determines economic policy.

Abstract

"An invaluable primer on the role economic reasoning plays in campus debate and decision making. Campus Economics provides college and university administrators, trustees, and faculty with an essential understanding of how college finances actually work. Sandy Baum and Michael McPherson explain the concepts needed to analyze the pros, the cons, and the trade-offs of difficult decisions, and offer a common language for discussing the many challenges confronting institutions of higher learning today, from COVID-19 to funding cuts and declining enrollments. Emphasizing the unique characteristics of the academic enterprise and the primacy of the institutional mission, Baum and McPherson use economic concepts such as opportunity cost and decisions at the margin to facilitate conversations about how best to ensure an institution's ongoing success. The problems facing higher education are more urgent than ever before, but the underlying issues are the same in good times and bad. Baum and McPherson give nontechnical, user-friendly guidance for navigating all kinds of economic conditions and draw on real-world examples of campus issues to illustrate both institutional constraints and untapped opportunities. Campus Economics helps faculty, administrators, trustees, and government policymakers engage in constructive dialogue that can lead to decisions that align finite resources with the pursuit of the institutional mission"-- "An invaluable primer on the role economic reasoning plays in campus debate and decision making"--

Abstract

One of the central issues in the study of the Chinese Communist Party and its foreign policy is its relations with Moscow. Was the CCP a Chinese nationalist party antagonistic to an intrusive Soviet Union or was it rather an internationalist party with ideological-political and strategic-military ties to Moscow, faithfully adhering to Marxist-Leninist principles as well as to Stalin's policy advice? For the past two decades a number of historians have argued that the CCP was a nationalist movement and that the United States missed its opportunity to establish friendly relations because U.S. leaders were blinded by fears of an international Communist threat. In his provocative book, Michael Sheng strongly challenges this position. On the basis of extensive new information obtained from recently available Chinese sources, Sheng demonstrates that the foreign policy of the CCP under Mao Zedong did, in fact, follow the directions recommended by Joseph Stalin.
