Ils sont graffeurs, street artistes, hackivistes ou artivistes plus ou moins célèbres. Dans la rue, sur le web ou dans les médias, leurs œuvres sont omniprésentes. Eux, pourtant, avancent à couvert: ils créent sous pseudonyme, fuient les journalistes et se protègent derrière toutes sortes de masques. Dans une société obsédée par la visibilité et le star system, leur discrétion étonne: elle semble contradictoire avec la notion même d'espace public. Pour quelles raisons se rendre invisible ? Que signifie artistiquement et politiquement ce choix ? Quelles sont les formes et ruses de l'invisibilité ? Aus Pompeji stammen mehrere tausend informeller Wandinschriften, die bei den Ausgrabungen zwar dokumentiert, aber nur sehr selektiv untersucht wurden. Für die damals neuartige Inschriftengattung prägte man im 19. Jahrhundert den Begriff "Graffiti", der heute für eine Vielzahl ganz unterschiedlicher Schrift- und Textformen verwendet wird. Assoziationen zu modernen Graffiti-Writings und Taggings werden dabei häufig leichtfertig auf antike Graffiti übertragen. Dabei stammt ein Großteil der pompejanischen Ritzinschriften aus den Innenräumen von Wohnhäusern und wirft damit die Frage nach ihrer Akzeptanz und Wahrnehmung auf. Polly Lohmann nähert sich den antiken Graffiti im Vergleich mit ihren modernen Namenspendants einerseits, mit anderen antiken Inschriften, Texten und Bildern andererseits. Fallstudien stellen einzelne Wohnhäuser mit ihren Graffiti vor, und in kontextübergreifenden Vergleichen werden Bezüge zu anderen Text- und Bildgattungen des urbanen Raums aufgezeigt. Sie machen deutlich, dass die pompejanischen Graffiti vielfach von dem geprägt waren, was man im Alltag sah und erlebte.

Since the dawn of Hip Hop graffiti writing on the streets of Philadelphia and New York City in the late 1960s, writers have anonymously inscribed their tag names on trains, buildings, and bridges. Passersby are left to imagine who the author might be, and, despite the artists' anonymity, graffiti subculture is seen as a boys club, where the presence of the graffiti girl is almost unimaginable. Jessica Nydia Pabon-Colon interrupts this stereotype and introduces us to the world of women graffiti artists. Drawing on the lives of over 100 women in 23 countries, Pabon-Colon argues that graffiti art is an unrecognized but crucial space for the performance of feminism. She demonstrates how it builds communities of artists, reconceptualizes the Hip Hop masculinity of these spaces, and rejects notions of girl power. 'Graffiti Grrlz' also unpacks the digital side of Hip Hop graffiti subculture and considers how it widens the presence of the woman graffiti artist and broadens her networks, which leads to the formation of all-girl graffiti crews or the organization of all-girl painting sessions.

Après avoir situé les origines et les sources d'inspiration dans le temps et dans l'espace, l'auteur présente les plus beaux sgraffites qu'elle a sélectionnés, entourée de spécialistes reconnus : les «incontournables», mais aussi d'autres méconnus, ceux dessinés par des sgraffistes qui ont brillamment marqué cet art, ceux représentatifs des thèmes en vogue, ceux qui ont été restaurés par des artisans passionnés.
