Appelé retable, car placé derrière la table d'autel, dit aussi polyptyque, parce que c'est un ouvrage aux nombreuses pliures, le " tableau multiple " prend aux XVe et XVIe siècles des formes particulièrement spectaculaires à travers l'Europe. Religieux par définition, il se développe en hauteur et en largeur, et peut occuper le mur entier d'une chapelle ; parfois, le nombre de ses panneaux augmente pour aboutir à des solutions aussi saisissantes que le retable majeur de la cathédrale de Palencia, en Espagne. Caterina Limentani Virdis et Mari Pietrogiovanna nous invitent à découvrir l'extrême variété de ces œuvres imposantes, en passant en revue les plus célèbres comme le Retable de l'agneau mystique des frères Van Eyck ou le Tryptique de Mérode du Maître de Flémalle, mais aussi certaines moins connues - le Retable du couronnement de la Vierge notamment, conservé dans une petite église de montagne, dans le Tyrol. Nous conduisant de l'Europe du Nord à l'Italie et à l'Espagne en passant par la Provence, les auteurs mettent en lumière les différents jeux d'influence qui ont marqué cette production. Les courants artistiques circulaient alors grâce aux artistes et aux souverains qui n'hésitaient pas à déplacer leur cour, à l'instar du roi René, et les commanditaires - nobles, bourgeois, ordres religieux, confréries, villes, etc. - jouaient un rôle déterminant, surtout dans les choix iconographiques. Ainsi, à côté des scènes religieuses traditionnelles prend place sur les retables une chronique de la vie quotidienne de l'Europe de la Renaissance, de même que de ses doutes et de ses angoisses, comme le traduisent les univers de Jérôme Bosch ou de Matthias Grünewald. De nombreux détails en pleine page permettent de restituer une partie de l'émotion ressentie devant ces œuvres étonnantes, et pour parfaire l'illusion, huit d'entre elles sont présentées sous forme de grands dépliants.
