Das Briefbuch Wibalds von Stablo und Corvey (1098–1158) ist die wichtigste Briefsammlung zur frühen Stauferzeit und zudem im Autograph überliefert. Wibald, seit 1130 Abt von Stablo, wurde im Herbst 1146 auf Betreiben König Konrads III. auch zum Abt von Corvey an der Weser gewählt. In dieser Situa-tion, die die Verantwortung für zwei bedeutende, sechs Tagesreisen vonein-ander entfernte Klöster mit sich brachte, entschloss sich Wibald, eine Art ‚tragbares Archiv’ anzulegen. Nach Dossiers geordnet wurden die überwie-gend undatierten Schreiben in den verschiedenen Angelegenheiten, mit denen Wibald sich auch im Auftrag des Königs und des Papstes befassen musste, eingetragen. Das Briefbuch umfasst den Zeitraum von Ende 1146 bis Herbst 1157, als Wibald von Friedrich Barbarossa gebeten wurde, zum Kaiser nach Byzanz zu reisen. Von dieser Gesandtschaft kehrte der Abt nicht mehr lebend zurück. Die Edition des Briefbuches, das 450 Stücke von und an Wibald sowie Schreiben dritter enthält, die von ihm verfasst wurden, folgt im Unterschied zu den Editionen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts der Reihenfolge im Autograph und versucht auch in der Einleitung, die Entstehung des autographen Codex deutlich zu machen.
