Der Sammelband führt sprachwissenschaftliche, sprachdidaktische und unterrichtspraktische Befunde zu Struktur und Erwerb des deutschen Schriftsystems zusammen. Auf der Grundlage von Ergebnissen der Graphematik zu strukturfunktionalen und erwerbstheoretischen Aspekten des Schriftsystems wird erörtert, wie die Einsichten in die Regularitäten des Schriftsystems für seine sachgerechte Modellierung als Basis für einen eigenaktiven und sprachbewussten Schriftspracherwerb genutzt werden können.Die schriftstrukturelle Fundierung wird in den Beiträgen des Bandes als Ausgangspunkt betrachtet, um zu angemessenen Vorstellungen über die Lernbarkeit des Schriftsystems zu gelangen, die in graphematisch orientierten sprachdidaktischen Konzeptionen münden. An empirischen Befunden wird gezeigt, wie ein graphematisch orientierter Unterricht einen bewussten Spracherwerb konstruktiv initiieren und unterstützen kann.Das Besondere an diesem Band besteht darin, dass er die Arbeitsperspektiven der graphematisch orientierten Sprachwissenschaft, der Sprachdidaktik und der Unterrichtspraxis miteinander verbindet und zeigt, wie grundlegend eine sachangemessene Basis für das entdeckende Lernen ist.
